Johnny and his brother Matthew Gaudreau were tragically hit by a car while riding their bikes in Oldmans Township, New Jersey on Thursday, August 29, the Columbus Dispatch reported. Johnny was 31 and Matthew was 29.

The brothers traveled to New Jersey to attend their sister Katie’s wedding and were to be bachelors in Philadelphia later that week. The wedding has since been postponed. Johnny and Matthew’s parents, Guy and Jane Gaudreau, also have daughters Katie and Kristen.

Us Weekly later confirmed that Sean M. Higgins, a 43-year-old man, was arrested in connection with the crash and charged with two counts of vehicular manslaughter. Higgins is suspected of driving under the influence, which caused him to veer off the road and hit the Gaudreau brothers.

Higgins reportedly admitted to drinking five to six beers before the crash, saying his alcohol consumption contributed to his impatience and reckless driving.

The tragic loss of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau left a deep impact on their family and community. Johnny, a beloved NHL star, and his brother Matthew were taken far too soon, leaving behind a legacy of love, memories, and untold potential. Meredith Gaudreau’s emotional tribute to her late husband reflects the deep bond they shared and the immense grief they now face. Her words serve as a poignant reminder of the transience of life and the irreplaceable value of time spent with loved ones.

The circumstances of their deaths only added to the grief, as an allegedly impaired driver led to the devastating crash. While justice may be served with the arrest of Sean M. Higgins, the Gaudreau family’s pain remains a stark reminder of the consequences of reckless driving. As they come to terms with this immense loss, their strength and resilience will undoubtedly see them through the difficult days ahead. The community continues to offer support to the Gaudreau family as they mourn the untimely deaths of Johnny and Matthew.
