A Tragic Day in Praia Grande: Hot Air Balloon Disaster Claims Eight Lives
What was supposed to be a serene and memorable experience quickly turned into a devastating tragedy when a hot air balloon carrying 21 people caught fire and crashed near Praia Grande, Brazil, on June 21.
The accident claimed the lives of eight people, including a mother and daughter, a doctor, and a dedicated skating coach, leaving families and communities grappling with heartbreak and disbelief.
The journey began as a scenic flight over the picturesque area of Praia Grande in Santa Catarina. The excursion, meant to rise nearly a kilometer into the air, was a popular activity for visitors and locals alike, especially over the Corpus Christi holiday.
At roughly $150 per person, it promised an unforgettable view of the region. But moments later, what started as a hopeful adventure became a scene of terror and chaos.
The Pilot’s Account
According to the pilot, the blaze started inside the basket, forcing him to make a rapid decision. As the balloon lost altitude, he urged passengers to jump when it was closer to the ground.
Some managed to leap to safety, but others weren’t as fortunate. The horrifying scene was captured in video footage that circulated online — flames consuming the balloon, desperate cries for help, and the craft crashing violently to the earth.
Authorities believe the fire originated from the balloon’s torch mechanism, igniting the basket and making it nearly impossible for those inside to escape. Those unable to exit the basket in time were either overtaken by the flames or lost their lives upon impact.
The Victims and Their Stories
Among those lost were:
Leise Herrmann Parizotto, 37, and her mother Leane Elizabeth Herrmann, 70, both from Blumenau.
Dr. Andrei Gabriel de Melo, 34, an esteemed ophthalmologist remembered for his warmth and dedication to his patients.
Leandro Luzzi, 36, a passionate skating coach who inspired countless young athletes.
Janaina Moreira Soares da Rocha, 46, and her husband Everaldo da Rocha, 53, who died in the crash. Their daughter, Luana, 23, survived by jumping from the balloon moments before it hit the ground.
Juliane Sawicki, 36, and her boyfriend, Fabio Izycki, 42, who were also among those confirmed lost.
Authorities stated that four people died as a result of the fall, while four others perished inside the burning basket. In a heart-wrenching detail, three of the victims were found holding each other in an embrace.
An Outpouring of Grief and Unity
Santa Catarina’s Governor Jorginho Mello called the accident a “soul-crushing tragedy” and promised that the state would support the families of the victims. In communities across the region, friends and relatives came together to honor those lost and pray for the recovery of the survivors.
The tragedy arrives just days after another hot air balloon crash in Boituva, São Paulo, which claimed one life and injured eleven people, intensifying questions about balloon safety across the country.
