Unsung heroes: Teachers who go above and beyond
Every day, teachers enter their classrooms and face a diverse group of children with unique personalities and learning styles. It’s a daunting task, to say the least, and it becomes even more daunting when you consider the responsibility of molding young minds into responsible and caring adults who will one day make positive contributions to their communities. Therefore, teaching is not just a profession; it is a profession that requires individuals with extraordinary qualities.
The best teachers, the ones who really make a difference, are the ones who go above and beyond to ensure that their students not only learn but thrive. Their dedication extends far beyond the walls of the classroom and they understand the profound impact they have on the lives of their students. Whether or not their efforts are recognized by parents, principals, or the community at large, these teachers persevere because they know their work is essential.
One of his students, a girl named Kristin Paulk, approached him while he was teaching his basketball class and asked if he could do her a favor. The PE teacher was in Valdosta, Georgia. The teacher agreed before he even knew what he was going to ask. Can you put my hair in a ponytail? asked the girl. Without pausing, the teacher bent down and started fixing her hair. Meanwhile, a co-worker named Kandice Anderson decided to film a rather unexpected scene. She later uploaded the video to her Facebook page and wrote:
“#CoachO #Love” when your job goes beyond teaching.
Kandice never imagined that the video would get more than 3 million views; she just wanted to show her friends what it really means to be a teacher. Little does he know that his act of generosity will go viral and make him, the PE teacher, famous. He was highlighted on Good Morning America because people found him too adorable.
I was surprised it got so much attention because we all do it.
The teacher happens to know how to do a ponytail because he is a single parent of three children. She jokes that Kristin should have had someone else do her hair if she wanted a more complicated look, as she has limited experience with hair styling.
In addition to appearing on Good Morning America, Kristin’s mother discussed her reactions to the footage. She says that having a teacher who genuinely cares about her students makes her extremely happy.
As Coach O’s story has touched the hearts of millions, it’s a reminder that there are countless Coach Os out there who are quietly changing the lives of their students. These educators may not seek recognition or fame, but they undoubtedly deserve our gratitude and support.
