Until a staff member sent Jason and Rebecca Vannest a photo of their 2-year-old son, they believed their child was safe at a daycare in Michigan.
Nothing in the world is more precious to parents than their children. Most parents will do anything to protect their children.
However, sometimes a place that seems safe for children can be traumatic. When this happens, parents experience excruciating pain as they contemplate what their children are going through.
THEIR VERY FIRST BABY
In 2013, Jason and Rebecca Vannest’s first child was born. The couple’s time was spent organizing everything they would need to do as new parents once Rebecca became pregnant.
The Vannests spent a lot of time choosing everything for their child because, like most first-time parents, they wanted to give him the best life possible. Even before he was born, they started looking for the biggest nursery school for him.

Before Rebecca found out she was expecting her first child, she made a list of training centers. After finding out she was pregnant, she and her husband visited several childcare facilities.
When William came home from daycare and walked into the house, Rebecca could see at first that he was upset. Jason and Rebecca decided to register their child at Rainbow Child Care Center in Michigan after analyzing the pros and cons of each daycare center in town. Little did they know that they would soon regret their choice.
ANGRY BABY
When their son William Vannest reached one year old, they believed him to be safe and dropped him off at a nursery. They were sure their son wouldn’t feel uncomfortable because they had done their homework.
A year later, things have changed dramatically. When William came home from daycare and walked into the house, Rebecca could see at first that he was upset. She even contacted the nursery to see if the child was disturbing anything.
She would feel reassured every time management told her nothing was wrong when she called. She noted, “It was like we had trust.”
Soon after, a nursery staff member, who wished to remain unnamed, gave Rebecca a picture of William being forced to wear a blanket while he napped. In the words of Jason Vannest, “She explained to us that he was physically bound to sleep, and over time it happened over a period of about a few months.”
Their confidence was betrayed by the insightful revelation, but they were also glad to know that William would not have to go through the same thing again.
AGAINST YOUR WILL
After seeing the photo, the Vannests believed it was a “clear case of abuse” because workers had held him against his will so they wouldn’t have to care for him. Giving her thoughts on the situation, Rebecca said: “It was, it was really upsetting.”
William was immediately pulled from the nursery by Jason and Rebecca, who also reported the incident to the police. They sought justice for their son.
After an investigation by the police and the state, it was found that the preschool was to blame for “restricting William’s movement during naps.” However, the daycare did not say whether it disciplined staff for abusing William. Rebekah stated:
“As a parent, it’s scary because I don’t know how another parent would find out this information.”
The Vannests were not happy with the results after the daycare betrayed their trust and complained about it. They considered the measures taken to be insufficient.
Their story underscored the importance of trust, transparency, and open communication between parents and childcare providers. She illuminated the resilience of families who, in the face of adversity, find the strength to defend their children and strive for a more secure future.
