When you hold your newborn for the first time, there should be pure joy and miracle.
For most parents, it is a life -changing magical experience. But what if, instead of great love and excitement, did you feel betrayal and fear of the person you thought it would cost? What if a man who promised to support you with all,
even parenting challenges, suddenly turned his back on you and your children? What would you do if the person you trust has left for you in your most vulnerable moments and let you face the most changing events?
After years of efforts to become pregnant, the birth of our triplets, Sophie, Lily and Grace was the birth of our dreams. When I held my girls in the hospital room, their quiet faces filled me with a great sense of love.
But when my husband Jack arrived the next day to take us home, something was obviously wrong. His face was pale and his movements hesitated. He stood at the door and did not want to approach.
“Jack,” I said gently, trying to assure him, “Come and look at them. They’re here. Our beautiful angels. We did it.”
He stirred forward and his voice was low. “Yeah … They’re beautiful,” he murmured, but she lacked warmth. “What’s the matter?” I asked and sensed something that was gone.
He took a deep breath and then broke up, “Emily, I don’t think we can keep them.”
I stared at him and washed at me. “What are you talking about? They’re our daughters!” Jack turned away, and his voice was trembling. “My mom went to the treasurer.
I stiffened. “Cashier clothes?” I repeated, my voice rose. “Jack, they’re children, not a sign!”
He looked contrary, but nodded. “My mom swears. She never thought.”
I felt an increase in anger. “So do you want to leave them? Do you want to leave your own daughters here in the hospital?”
Jack couldn’t meet my eyes. “If you want to keep them, okay,” he said weakly. “But I won’t be there.”
The tears filled my eyes as his words hit me hard. “If you get out of the door, jack,” I whispered, and my voice broke, “Don’t come back.”
He hesitated, shameing blown over his face, but eventually turned and left without another word.
The door killed behind him and I shocked there. Soon afterwards the sister appeared, her face softened when she saw my tears.
Over the next few weeks, I have adapted to my life as a single mother.
One afternoon Jack’s sister Beth came to visit. She has always been one of his family members who supported me. That day was her face full of concern, and I knew she had something important.
“Emily,” she started slowly, “I heard how my mom spoke with her aunt Carol.
I stiffened. “What do you mean?”
Beth sighed, her expression full of regret. “She earned it all. She told Jack that the children would be unlucky, so she would stay close to her instead of concentrating on you and girls. She wanted her grandchildren. She was disappointed directly from the Gender Reveant Party. I think she had this plan all the time.”
A wave of anger was scored over me. “She lied to destroy our family,” I whispered, shaking my hands. “How could she do?”
Beth nodded. “I don’t think she realized that Jack would really leave, but I thought you should know.” I couldn’t sleep that night. I wanted to face Jack, but more than I needed him to understand the truth. I called him the next morning.
“Jack, it’s me,” I said when he replied. “We have to talk.”
He sighed hard. “I don’t think it’s a good idea.”
“Your mom lied,” I said, and my voice shakes with anger. “There was no holes.
At the other end of the line was silence. He finally mocked. “My mom wouldn’t lie about anything like that.”
“She admitted to Aunt Carol, Jack. Beth heard her. Why should I think of it?”
“I’m sorry, Emily,” he said. “I can’t do that.”
The line was dead.
A few weeks later, Jack’s mother knocked on my door. She looked pale and regret, tears running down her face.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “I never thought Jack would leave you. I just … I was afraid I lost him.”
“What about your grandchildren’s granddaughters? Your fear and selfishness have torn my family,” I said coldly.
She nodded and her face was crumpled. “I’m sorry. I’ll do anything to fix it.”
I shook my head. “You can’t do anything. Please leave.”
She left, her shoulders fell after the defeat.
A year later, Jack appeared on Prague, looked skinny and full of regret. “I made a mistake,” he said, and his voice broke. “I should have believed you. I’m sorry. I want to go back. I want to be a family again.”
But until then I have decided.
“You left us when we needed you most,” I said firm. “We have built a life without you and I will not allow you to hurt us again.”
I closed the door, my heart stable and strong.
That night, when I swung my daughters to sleep, I realized that we didn’t need Jack. Our family was complete – just me and my girls.
