“My Partner Discovered I’m Renting Out My Inherited Home and Wants Half the Income”

Caught in an unexpected whirlwind of emotions and misunderstandings, an 18-year-old woman finds herself in a tumultuous situation stemming from her hidden ownership of a two-story building. Little did she know the conflict would erupt after her boyfriend discovered her status as a secret landlord, setting the stage for relationship turmoil.

In a stroke of luck, the woman’s father gave the woman a two-story house and gave her the opportunity to rent out the lower floor for extra income. Unbeknownst to her boyfriend, she was living upstairs while lucratively renting the space below for $500, which she thought was reasonable given the location’s distance from amenities and the city.

The woman claims that the only reason she charges so much is the location of the apartment, which is fifteen minutes from the nearest store and an hour’s drive from the city. Her attack made sense; a comparable modern pad would cost you between $600 and $700.

She asked her boyfriend of six months to move in with her when she was eighteen. He didn’t want to move back in with his parents at that time because he was having housing problems. She suggested he stay with her as long as he needed as a solution.

He did not know that she was the owner of the apartment during their three months of cohabitation. She doesn’t ask him to pay utilities or rent, but they split the grocery bill equally.

The woman assumed that it would not make a big difference, she kept the ownership of the building a secret from her partner. She didn’t discuss it with many people before it started being talked about.

But one day her tenant came knocking on the door and told her that the freezer was broken. Meanwhile, her boyfriend heard their conversation but remained silent.

After accompanying the tenant downstairs to inspect the matter, she advised them to buy a new one. Based on the receipt, the tenant would eventually receive payment for the freezer.

The woman told her friend that the freezer could not be fixed when she went upstairs to ask for an update. She continued and said: I refused but added that I would cover the cost if [the tenant] decided to buy a new one. I told him I was her landlord [sic] and he gave me a crazy look and asked why on earth I would pay for her freezer.

The boyfriend lost it at that point and started yelling at his girlfriend. He questioned her as to why she kept the knowledge from him and condemned her for it. Even after she apologized, he continued to abuse her.

Furthermore, he said that he could not believe that he was in a relationship with the landlord because they were only interested in making money.

“He insisted that I give him half of my rental income or I was as bad off as he believed,” the woman noted. After her boyfriend gave her the silent treatment, the woman was able to collect her thoughts for a moment.

She decided to break up with her partner and asked her father to drop her off at her house so they could talk outside in the driveway. Her boyfriend confronted her that day, demanding an apology and asking why she refused to give him part of her earnings.

“You shouldn’t have a problem giving that money away as long as you’re not renting it out to take people’s money,” he noted. The woman asked why her boyfriend, who thought that landlords were bad people who only rent out spaces for money, was taking money. She also asked if he would give the remaining 50% to a housing charity.

The woman recalled her boyfriend calling her selfish and saying he regretted ever meeting her, although her memory was cloudy afterward. In addition, he tried to punch a hole in the wall and threatened to reveal it to her friends.

The woman then texted her father, who came upstairs. She recounted: “My boyfriend just laughed and told us both he was out and never wanted to see us again.”

Many Reddit users weighed in on the issue and supported the woman. Although her boyfriend returned the keys, some advised her to change the locks.

Was the woman right to end their relationship and refuse to give her boyfriend half of her rent? How would you handle things in this case?

The story of a young woman who discovers her boyfriend’s reaction to her hidden status as a landlord has sparked a whirlwind of emotions and confrontations. As she navigated the aftermath of revealing her ownership, the situation spiraled into an unexpected split that revealed differing views on financial responsibility and moral principles.

This young woman found herself in the difficult situation of inadvertently hiding her role as a property owner while adjusting to her boyfriend’s living arrangement. Upon discovering her status as a landlord, her boyfriend’s reaction took a hostile turn, demanding a share of her rental income and expressing disdain for her actions.

The ensuing conflict, marked by intense confrontations and ultimatums, led to a decisive separation. The woman decided to end the relationship and sought solace in her father’s support as the situation escalated.

While Reddit users have largely rallied behind the woman’s decision, the scenario raises complex ethical questions. Should she have disclosed her landlord status sooner? Was her boyfriend’s demand for half the rent justified or rooted in misconceptions about property ownership?

Ultimately, this story sheds light on the importance of transparency and communication in relationships, especially when it comes to financial matters. Differences in opinion among the individuals involved underscore the complexity of personal values and perceptions.

In this emotionally charged scenario, the woman’s decision to prioritize her autonomy and property rights by ending the relationship is proof of her principles. The fallout serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of mutual respect and understanding within a partnership, especially when it comes to financial disclosure and differing beliefs about wealth and property ownership.

  1. i see no reason why she had to tell her BF THAT SHE WAS THE OWNER, SHE GAVE HIM FREE RENT WHICH WOULD AMOUNT TO MORE THAN HALF IF HE WAS PAYING SOME WHERE ELSE, SHE WAS RIGHT IN BOOTING HIS ASS TO THE CURB, BAD TEMPER AND ALL, HE SOUNDS LIKE A SOVRIEGN CITIZEN TYPE.

  2. Her “friend” was not entitled to any of her income. That would be like asking her to turn over half her income if say she worked at a hardware store or anywhere. That is totally ridiculous. The best thing she could do was get rid of this stupid overly manipulative and narcissistic AH and move on. The guy was already sponging off of her by living there rent free. What a loser.
