The Day a Client Lost More Than Just Her Earrings
Working in a salon, you quickly learn that no two days are the same. Most of the time, it’s just routine trims and color touch-ups. But every now and then, something happens that feels like it’s straight out of a movie.
That’s exactly how I felt when one of my wealthiest clients lost something extremely valuable right in my chair—and her reaction surprised me more than the loss itself.
I’ve been a hairstylist for years, and while I love the craft, dealing with a wide range of personalities can be exhausting. Some clients you forget as soon as they walk out, but others leave behind stories that stick with you forever.

One client, known for her designer clothes and flashy jewelry, always came into the salon with the kind of style that turns heads. A few days after her last visit, she returned in tears, explaining that she’d lost a pair of very expensive earrings. She begged me to check if they might have slipped onto the floor during her appointment.
I moved a table and—there they were—glinting quietly where they must have fallen. I picked them up and showed them to her.
She rushed over, grabbed the earrings, and confirmed, “Yes, these are mine!” But then she surprised me. After a quick glance, she wrinkled her nose and said, “I won’t wear them anymore—they’ve been on the floor. If you want them, you can keep them.” And just like that, she left.
I stood there, stunned, earrings in hand. Was it generosity? Arrogance? Or indifference to something so valuable? Whatever it was, those earrings were beautiful—and in the end, I kept them.
Conclusion
That day taught me something valuable about how differently people value things. What one person sees as ruined or worthless, another might treasure. For me, those earrings weren’t just accessories—they became a story I’ll never forget. Working with people guarantees you’ll always have unexpected moments that turn an ordinary day into something unforgettable.
