December 5, 1945, five bombers Avenger Torpedo of Fort Lauderdale, embarked on what was supposed to be a routine three-hourbomine mission, which they completed countless times earlier.
Shortly after dropping the payload of the replica bombs, however, the flight came across difficulties. Lieutenant Charles C. Taylor, a seasoned pilot, believed that his compass was not working, causing the plane to leave the course.
Taylor feared and reached out to the nearby flight. As the weather conditions deteriorated, Taylor decided to ignore the standard protocol and did not head to the setting sun to regain bearings. Instead, he was convinced that they were over the Florida Keys, redirecting the plane towards the Gulf of Mexico.
It was believed that the flight hit the ocean, and the Navy began immediate search and rescue operations. Two flying sailors were sent to look for a missing aircraft, but only 20 minutes after takeoff one of the sailors disappeared from the radar. Despite extensive efforts, not even 13 crew members, five flight pilots 19, nor the remains of the aircraft were never found.
The disappearance of Flight 19 and PBM Mariner remains one of the most processed mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle without finding any convincing evidence or debris.
