“Napier Native Mateo Deveraturda Makes Headlines”

What began like any routine childhood illness—a slight fever, a runny nose, symptoms so familiar to parents everywhere—soon took a harrowing turn.

Eleven-year-old Mateo Deveraturda’s health declined at a terrifying pace, leaving doctors overwhelmed and his family shattered.

What started as what seemed like a simple flu transformed rapidly into a critical medical emergency, catching everyone off guard. How could a vibrant boy slip away so suddenly? Were there signs that went unnoticed? Could tragedy have been averted?

Mateo was first admitted to Hawke’s Bay Hospital, but as his condition worsened, he was urgently transferred to Auckland’s Starship Children’s Hospital, according to the New Zealand Herald. On June 25, 2025, his family shared the devastating news on their Givealittle page:

“With heavy hearts, we announce that Mateo peacefully passed away at 6:15 a.m. on June 25, surrounded by those who loved him most. His courage through this ordeal was immense.”

Mateo’s body was returned to Napier the following day, resting at home to allow family and friends to pay their respects.

The family had previously reached out for support after Mateo was admitted to pediatric intensive care, revealing that his illness “escalated rapidly from what seemed like a common flu into a life-threatening emergency.” Initially treated at Hawke’s Bay, he was soon moved to Hastings Hospital for urgent attention, then airlifted to Auckland as his organs began to fail. Sedated and in a coma, Mateo fought bravely in the face of overwhelming odds.

Donations poured in to assist with the mounting expenses of travel and care. “Your kindness has lightened our load, allowing us to be present with Mateo in every moment of his fight,” the family expressed before his passing.

By the time Mateo died, the fundraising page had gathered nearly $12,000.

In a heartfelt Facebook tribute, Mateo’s father, Brian Deveraturda, wrote:

“Thank you for the privilege of being your dad these 11 wonderful years. You filled our lives with joy and love every day. I love you deeply, my son. Heaven has gained a precious new angel.”

St. Patrick’s School, Mateo’s school community, also paid tribute, sharing:

“Please keep Mateo’s family and all who loved him in your thoughts and prayers. During this difficult time, let’s come together in compassion and support. If anyone needs assistance, do not hesitate to reach out—we are here.”

Reflection:

These stories, from the gut-wrenching loss of young Mateo to moments of humor and heroism, remind us of life’s fragile unpredictability and profound humanity. Whether facing grief, joy, or courage, each narrative underscores a simple truth:

it’s not only what happens to us that shapes our lives, but how we respond. Through sorrow and laughter, fear and strength, these retellings go beyond mere facts—they offer us connection, feeling, and a deeper appreciation for the rich complexity of the human journey.
