On the day of Nebraska’s graduation ceremony, a family of four tragically lost their lives in a suspected murder-suicide.Â
A Nebraska community is grieving after a day intended for celebration turned into a devastating tragedy.Â
On may 10, just hours before 18-year-old hudson koch was set to graduate from cozad high school, authorities discovered the bodies of hudson, his 16-year-old brother asher, and their parents, jeremy and bailey koch, in their home near johnson lake in plum creek canyon.
According to the nebraska state patrol, 42-year-old jeremy koch is believed to have fatally stabbed his wife and two sons before taking his own life. All four were found in their beds with fatal knife wounds, and a knife was recovered at the scene. The investigators are handling the case as a triple homicide-suicide.Â
The horrific scene was discovered around 9:45 a.M. By bailey’s parents, lane and peggy kugler.Â
‘i found our two grandsons, hudson and asher, our daughter bailey, and our son-in-law jeremy dead in their beds,’ the kuglers wrote in a heartbreaking facebook postÂ
Lane explained that jeremy had long struggled with mental illness, and his depression had escalated into psychosis. ‘it was not jeremy who committed this horrific act. It was a deranged mind,’ he wrote.
The family found comfort in their faith, believing their loved ones are now ‘four new angels sitting at the right hand of god.’ lane added, ‘they are together now, and jeremy’s sickness is gone.’.Â
Jeremy had reportedly been released from a mental health facility just three days earlier following a five-day stay. Bailey, a teacher and vocal mental health advocate, had shared updates about jeremy’s treatment on their facebook page, ‘anchoring hope for mental health,’ which the couple created to support others facing similar struggles.Â
‘what a difference five days, hydration, nutrition, med changes, therapy, and a safety plan can make!’ bailey wrote in a hopeful message, sharing a smiling photo of the coupleÂ
Despite their optimism, Jeremy’s mental health issues reportedly persisted. In a previously posted and later removed gofundme, bailey revealed that jeremy had survived multiple suicide attempts, including a recent car crash. She wrote that he had been devastated to have survived the most recent attempt.
Following the tragedy, holdrege public schools released a tribute to Bailey, describing her as a dedicated educator, a compassionate colleague, and a vibrant presence within the school community. They expressed that her absence would be deeply felt.Â
The Cozad community schools released a statement expressing their recognition of the incident and its significant effect on the community. The school offered grief counseling and emotional support to students and staff, and the graduation ceremony proceeded as scheduled.Â
