Neighbors Angry He Wouldn’t Allow Them To Utilize His Pool, Needs Your Recommendation

Sharing every detail with your neighbors is often discouraged, as maintaining personal boundaries is essential. If you’re fortunate, your neighbors respect those boundaries and interactions primarily revolve around exchanging food or inviting them to enjoyable barbecues. Occasionally, you may allow their children to utilize your amenities such as pools or playgrounds.

However, there will always exist individuals who exploit the kind-hearted nature of others. These individuals seem oblivious to the concept of “limits.” Such was the sentiment of a man who found himself in a predicament when his neighbors expressed discontent because he refused to grant them access to his swimming pool.

Seeking advice and empathy, the man turned to Reddit to recount his challenging situation. Initially, the tale commenced as a benevolent act but concluded with the man feeling taken advantage of by his neighbor.

He and his fiancée had recently relocated to a tranquil neighborhood, experiencing a reassuring sense of security due to its small-town ambiance. Observing the presence of children, approximately nine or ten years old, they decided to install a swimming pool, intending to occasionally host children’s gatherings—particularly since they would soon become parents themselves.

Little did he expect the situation to escalate…

The man shared, “Last year, I had an above-ground pool installed, which greatly delighted the neighborhood kids. I informed them that no dogs were allowed in the pool due to its fragile lining, which could easily rupture.” Initially, everything proceeded smoothly.

On one occasion, when the children were playing in the pool during their parents’ absence, an unsettling incident unfolded upon the couple’s return. The man explained, “This year, while we were away, the kids used the pool. When we returned, I noticed a decline in the water level and attempted to refill it.”

To his dismay, he discovered a notable tear on one side of the pool. Despite this setback, he opted to persevere rather than lodge a complaint.

The following day, when the children requested access to the pool again, they arrived accompanied by their Labrador Retriever. However, as the man had just repaired the pool, he declined their request and declared it temporarily closed.

Upon returning home on another day, he witnessed a heated altercation between his neighbor and his fiancée. Apparently, the neighbors accused the couple of causing their children distress by denying them the use of the swimming pool.

Though the man explained the situation and his reasons for discontinuing the children’s access, the neighbors insisted that he reopen the pool and permit their children to swim.

Now, seeking the internet’s perspective, he questions whether it was wrong for him to reject his neighbors’ children a second time.

In response to his plea, Reddit users shared their opinions in the comments section. Some even referenced the “attractive nuisance” law, emphasizing that he was entirely justified in prohibiting the neighbors’ children from entering his property.

  1. First mistake; inviting neighbors to use the pool. Most people get a pool for the exclusive use of their family and close friends, not the neighbors! We live in a neighborhood where nearly everyone has a pool. There is no exchange of swimming rights. We have a good relationship with all the neighbors, but again, no invitations to use a personal pool. We have a funny sign that says “We don’t swim in your toilet, please don’t pee in our pool.” You get a bunch of people who have no vested interest in your property; they won’t care if they pee in your pool, especially children. Disgusting.

  2. Trespassing is a crime. Anyone entering the premise of 1234 St. without the owner’s permission for that particular time and date will be subject to citation or arrest. This is private property for the sole use of the owners and or specifically invited guests.

If necessary you may contact the local court system for a further legal explanation of the rights of others.
