NFL Star and Community Rally Behind Teen Who Walked 6 Miles to His Graduation

Xavier Jones, a resilient 14-year-old from North St. Louis, Missouri, knows the value of taking matters into his own hands. Growing up in the care of his grandfather following the loss of his mother a few years ago, Xavier, along with his six siblings, faced numerous challenges in life.

Yet, Xavier’s indomitable spirit has propelled him through life’s challenges, culminating in his graduation from Yeatman Middle School this year—a remarkable achievement!

The graduation ceremony was scheduled at Harris-Stowe State University, located approximately 6.5 miles from his home. The only problem was that Xavier’s grandfather’s car had given out, and there were no other transportation options available.

With determination as his compass, Xavier embarked on a two-and-a-half-hour journey to the graduation venue. “He did what he had to do,” said his mentor, Darren Seals. “The shoes that he walked in had holes in the bottom, holes in the top. Two-and-a-half hours of walking— a daunting task. I wouldn’t have done it.” He meticulously planned the route using an online map, ensuring his goal was within walking distance.

Xavier invited his brother and a friend to accompany him on this symbolic graduation pilgrimage, both eager to support him. “I wanted to walk across the stage,” Xavier shared. “If you want something done, you gotta go ahead and do it yourself.”

Dr. LaTonia Collins Smith, the esteemed President of Harris-Stowe, became aware of Xavier’s remarkable odyssey. To the astonishment of everyone at the ceremony, she presented him with a touching gesture—a priceless four-year scholarship. Xavier’s heart brimmed with joy! President Collins-Smith shared her motivation: “I simply followed my heart, which told me that this young individual needed a scholarship. Many of our students carry unique narratives and have triumphed over environmental obstacles.”

President Collins-Smith’s compassion sparked a chain reaction of kindness. NFL Miami Dolphins star Terron Armstead, moved by Xavier’s story, wanted to make a meaningful contribution. “When we hear a story like Xavier’s, it’s only right,” Terron Armstead said. “Follow Xavier’s example. He’s a leader, whether he wants to be or not. His story is inspiring and motivating. That’s what leaders do.”

During a celebrity basketball game in St. Louis, Armstead, along with other NFL players, presented Xavier Jones and his family with unforgettable gifts. They gifted Xavier’s family a $40,000 minivan through the assistance of Bommarito Automotive, ensuring that Xavier’s grandfather and the entire family could now travel comfortably. Additionally, they presented Xavier with a $5,000 Ryan Pritchard Electric Bike, offering him an alternative mode of transportation. Xavier’s grandfather, who battles Sickle Cell Anemia, expressed deep gratitude for these life-changing gifts.

Xavier’s decisions on that fateful day not only reshaped his own life but also ignited inspiration in countless others. “Beyond the horizon, there’s a treasure waiting,” President Collins Smith reflected. “I gained profound insights from Xavier that day. No matter how challenging things may seem, always persist and move forward.”
