Serena Bennett, a recent graduate of Northwest Nazarene University, was a vibrant and dedicated young woman whose passion for wildlife and commitment to service set her apart.
At just 21, Serena’s promising journey was tragically cut short during a SCUBA diving expedition in Ecuador, where she was studying alongside classmates and faculty. Known for her adventurous nature and compassionate soul, Serena’s life was defined by her academic excellence and heartfelt work with animal rescue—leaving an enduring mark on all who knew her.
On Sunday, May 18, 2025, the Northwest Nazarene University community was shaken by the loss of Serena Bennett during a SCUBA dive off Ecuador’s coast. The university had organized an academic program involving eleven students and three faculty members, all certified divers trained for the expedition.
Despite the team’s preparedness, an emergency unfolded underwater. Despite immediate efforts from faculty, dive professionals, and medical responders, Serena succumbed to the incident. In the wake of this tragedy, NNU has stood alongside her family and peers, uniting in prayer and support.
Dr. John Cossel Jr., Chair of NNU’s Biology Department, reflected on Serena’s character: a young woman fueled by faith and a profound love for the natural world. Her fascination with marine creatures, especially Orca whales, and her hands-on conservation work in Florida, particularly with sharks and stingrays, were testaments to her adventurous spirit.
Serena was also a pioneering participant in NNU’s Creation Care Study Program in New Zealand, where she further cultivated her connection with nature.
Beyond her studies, Serena was passionate about education—whether it was helping middle schoolers understand photosynthesis or engaging with the Aquarium of Boise’s outreach efforts. Her enthusiasm extended to every interaction, be it dressed as a mascot or guiding children through aquatic life lessons. Her talent for photography captured the beauty of her classmates and the environments they explored.
Chadwick Pearsall, NNU’s Director of Global Connections, highlighted Serena’s academic journey, including her summer 2023 field research at the Au Sable Institute’s Pacific Rim campus in Washington and her fall 2024 studies in Kaikoura, New Zealand, where she often visited a nearby fur seal colony. Pearsall fondly recalled her joy upon seeing a rescue dog from Lake Lowell Animal Rescue, where Serena volunteered with deep commitment.
Lake Lowell Animal Rescue (LLAR), where Serena dedicated over four years of service, expressed their profound grief. From humble beginnings as a cleaner, she quickly became an indispensable team member—managing events, coordinating fosters, and spearheading rescues. Her fearless dedication saw her navigating hazardous conditions to save vulnerable animals, while fostering everything from cats and dogs to rabbits and chickens.
LLAR’s tribute painted a picture of Serena’s selflessness—always putting others first, sharing treats, celebrating birthdays, and profoundly impacting both human and animal lives. The organization temporarily paused operations to mourn and planned a memorial in her honor.
Family members shared their sorrow publicly, with Serena’s aunt remembering her as a joyful spirit who filled life with laughter, shared stories, and beautiful photos. As the family grieves, they ask for prayers and support in this heartbreaking time.
Serena Bennett’s passing leaves a void in her university, animal rescue community, and the hearts of many. Yet, her legacy of kindness, determination, and devotion to God’s creation remains a beacon of inspiration. Though her time was brief, the love and difference she made endure in those who knew and cherished her.
