When Australian Ally Langdon spoke to a mother and father who, just 13 years ago, were forced to decide to end the life of the young child they gave birth to, she could not hide her anguish.
A young child died after falling victim to a chrome-plating practice that went viral, and Langdon, the mother, struggled to hold back tears as she witnessed it.
Andrea and Paul Haynes discussed the death of their 13-year-old daughter Esra on A Current Affair with host Ally Langdon after engaging in the risky chemical inhalation craze known as ‘chroming’, which is popular on social media.
Esra, a young athlete who was co-captain of the Montrose Football Netball Club and raced BMX bikes with her siblings, was praised by her peers for being “determined, fun, sassy, and talented”. In Queensland, Esra also led her team to a national aerobics title.
On March 31, Esra went to her friend’s house for a sleepover and inhaled aerosol deodorant in search of a fatal clue. This resulted in cardiac arrest and lifelong brain damage.
Her mother, Andrea Langdon, told Langdon in an interview, “It was just a normal routine of going out with friends.” We always knew where she was and who she was with, her father Paul continued. There was nothing unusual about it. At that hour of the night, we called out unhappily, “Come and get your daughter”. It was one of those calls that no parent ever wants to have.
According to Langdon, Esra’s companions believed she was having a panic attack, “but after inhaling the deodorant, her body actually shut down, she was in cardiac arrest, and no one uses cardiac arrest to sleep.”
Andrea arrived at Esra while she was being resuscitated and paramedics told her mother that Esra was paraplegic, something she had never heard of.
Esra was immediately taken to the hospital in hopes that their little daughter would make a full recovery. She had a strong heart and lungs, so maybe she could handle it.
Esra’s brain injury was “irreparable” according to Paul and Andrea, and they had to decide to turn off the machine after eight days on life support.
Her parents struggled to communicate and recalled their saddest day as they recalled the pain of ending their daughter’s life.
Esra’s father admitted it was extremely difficult to say goodbye to such a young soul when he was asked to bring relatives and friends to the hospital for their final farewell. They put her on the bed so we could lie with her. We kept her close until the very end.
Parental anxiety caused Langdon, a mother of two young children, to lose control of her emotions and sob.
Paul claims that after Esra’s death in the first week of April, Imogen, Seth, and Charlie are “shattered” and the whole family is “broken”.
It was just horrible for everyone involved, including her friends, Paul added. It was the most difficult and terrifying time for any parent. We didn’t sleep, we didn’t eat much, we didn’t smile and otherwise, we don’t act like us. But the community is also affected, not only us.
After their daughter was killed by a chrome they’d never heard of, Paul and his wife are now on a mission to spread the word about this deadly viral trend that’s growing in popularity among teenagers and can easily be done in-store. -purchased products such as deodorant, paints, hair sprays, or even permanent markers.
Paul expressed regret that he did not know about chroming when Esra was still alive and may have informed her of the risk in an interview with a local news source. If we were informed and the information spread, we would no doubt be discussing it at the kitchen table.
“We need to step it up and let these kids learn the information directly from the source, not through friends or social media – then they get the right advice right away.”
Pavel wants to educate parents so that they can ensure a better life for their children and maybe even save them.
“(Parents) need to get down and talk to their kids and just gently start a conversation with them. We definitely had no idea what was going on.
Since 2009, the alarming trend of chrome plating has resulted in numerous child deaths in Australia and other countries.
Chroming is common among young people, a quick fix to get into the mountains that can result in organ failure, seizures, heart attacks, asphyxiation, and sudden stinky death.
Paul told Langdon, “We have images in our minds that will never be erased, you know what we were confronted with. “Our insides were ripped out.
We cannot imagine the pain a family must go through to make the decision to take their young child off life support. Esra’s surviving family members and the Haynes family are in our thoughts and prayers.
