The moment Tina Louise was cast as Ginger in the popular TV series Gilligan’s Island, she became an instant celebrity. The native of New York excelled as an actress, singer, and model. She was, however, often complimented for her appearance rather than necessarily for her work on television.
Louise is currently the last surviving member of Gilligan’s Island. The program made an indelible impression on her despite having a career outside of acting. When you see the 89-year-old today, you will find it hard to believe that she is not several decades younger! Let’s take a look at her amazing life, career, and current look.
On February 11, 1934, Tina Blacker was born in New York and became Tina Louise. Her mother was a model while her father owned a candy store.
Tina Louise’s early life and career
Tina’s parents split up when she was just four years old, disrupting her life.
“My journey was pretty unique. I had a gypsy type of life where I lived with a lot of different cousins, uncles, strangers and so on,” she told Authority Magazine in 2019.
As a child, Tina never had great ambitions to work in the world of entertainment.
But things changed a few weeks before she was to enroll at Miami University.
According to Tina Louise’s statement to Authority Magazine, “I saw a friend of mine who got a part in a Broadway play and he was the same age as me, and I was very impressed.”
“My mom took me backstage and I really enjoyed it,” she concluded. “Having my boyfriend there gave me a bit of motivation to just keep going. I explained to my mum that drama wasn’t good enough for me and that I wanted to leave university.
Tina’s mother respected her request because she was aware that her daughter wanted to work in the theater department. She began attending the Neighborhood Playhouse in Manhattan, New York, and stated that it “was and still is an amazing school”.
Tina Louise began modeling while training and honing her craft at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre. She also had a job singing in nightclubs. She first appeared in the Bette Davis musical Two’s Company on Broadway in 1952. People were captivated by her looks at the time, and she also appeared in Playboy Magazine.
It’s Time for Tina, Tina Louise’s debut music album, was released in 1957. She continued acting and landed several roles in films. However, her life changed in 1958.
The debut performance of ‘God’s Little Acre
She became famous in Hollywood for her performance as Griselda Walden in the drama film God’s Little Acre. The film’s excellent reviews led to Tina Louise winning the Golden Globe for Best New Star of the Year.
It was amazing, she said, according to Forbes. “The film ended up showing at the Venice Film Festival. I traveled abroad. All these individuals there took care of me. I had nothing to fear. Gilligan’s Island would make Tina Louise something of a Hollywood icon. When she got the part, she was starring opposite Carol Burnett in the musical comedy Fade Out-Fade In on Broadway. Louise read the script but wasn’t sure if it was the right part for her.

Kit Smythe originally played Ginger in the premiere episode. However, Tina Louise was the solution when they decided to force her out of the bombshell role.

Tina Louise remained for a total of 98 episodes over the course of the show’s three seasons on CBS. Despite her party’s popularity, she never returned to it in any subsequent TV or film reunions.

He wished Gunsmoke would restart. So they canceled our show,” she continued. “It just went on and on and on in syndication,” the spokesperson said.
“When it stopped, I just continued with my previous activities. Those were the dramatic roles,” she continued.
Tina Louise continued to celebrate success in both music and acting. In addition to her role in the 1974 TV series Kojak, she also appeared in The Stepford Wives (1975), The OC and Stiggs (1987), and Johnny Sue (1992), starring Brad Pitt and a rockabilly satire.
Although Tina had reached retirement age, she was determined to pursue her passion. Her role in the spiritual play Tapestry in 2014 made other things more interesting.

Les Crane, a television talk show personality, was married to Tina Louise for four years. They had a daughter, Caprice Crane, who later became a producer, screenwriter, and writer. The couple divorced in 1971. The two grandchildren Tina now has are what she refers to as “my two beautiful babies”.
The 89-year-old continues to live in Manhattan’s Turtle Bay, where she was born and raised.
Even as Tina ages, which is still hard to imagine looking at her paintings, she longs to find the right man.
