The 41-year-old, best known for his role in Netflix’s Elite, suffered a cardiac arrest in front of a crowd at Zahora Beach in Barbate, Spain on Sunday, August 25, The Sun reported.
Despite the efforts of paramedics to revive him for 30 minutes, Ortega was pronounced dead.
Actress Silvia Marso praised Ortega on social media, describing him as “a great actor and fellow honest, honorable and just as good a person as his parents, Gloria Muñoz and Jose Antonio Ortega.”
Marso continued, “I can’t even begin to imagine how these parents, colleagues, and loved ones in this profession must be feeling. How horrible… I can’t process it. Absolute sadness.”
Ortega played the manager of La Cabana restaurant in six episodes of Elite in 2018.
In addition to his work on Elite, Ortega has recently appeared in Spanish TV shows such as 4 Estrellas, The Countryside, Untameable, Velvet, Nunc et in Hora and Caronte.
Ortega’s IMDb also lists his completion of the upcoming film Trumpet before his death.
Actor Paco Collado, who portrayed Ortega’s father in El Pueblo, paid tribute to his former co-star on social media, noting that Ortega “left us with sympathy, generosity and professionalism” and lamenting the tragic loss at such a young age.
The Spanish Actors’ Union also expressed its condolences, expressing “sincere condolences to the actor’s family and friends”.
Ortega’s mother Gloria is also an actress who recently appeared on Apple TV+ in Land of Women opposite Eva Longoria.
