A well-known British singer-songwriter, Seal is known for his beautiful songs, velvety voice, and signature facial scars.
These scars, now associated with his music, have given rise to many debates and theories. Now we reveal the real story behind these supposedly “traumatizing” distinguishing marks.
When he was twenty-one years old, it started.
Well-known British singer-songwriter Seal recently shared details about the deeply personal story behind the scars that defined his appearance.
In a candid interview, Seal revealed that discoid lupus erythematosus, an autoimmune disease affecting the skin, is the cause of the scars on his face. On my twenty-first birthday, I remember sitting against a wall and noticing a small pimple on one side of my face that was getting worse. It turned out to be discoid lupus,” he revealed.
At first, there was no diagnosis.
“I remember seeing doctors, but no one was able to identify the condition,” Seal said of how difficult it was to get a diagnosis for his facial scars. This went on forever. I didn’t have the opportunity to see a reputable doctor who eventually diagnosed me with lupus until celebrity and wealth found me.
His self-esteem was greatly affected by the scars, but that is no longer the case.
During an open discussion about his scars, Seal said, “Oh, it knocked my confidence.” However, Seal now realizes the wisdom of age: “But if you said, now at the age of 60, how would I change anything… if I could, nothing,” he paused before saying. This admission highlights a profound personal development in which wounds have gone from being a source of insecurity to an essential part of his story.
In another review, he openly admitted that he initially felt self-conscious about his scars, but that “this body is not who we are”. I was spared a lot of trouble.
“What initially traumatized me a bit turned out to be something that made me instantly recognizable,” he says.
Seal’s past is similarly filled with anxiety and panic attacks.
Seal has struggled with anxiety and panic episodes for nearly thirty years, in addition to facial scarring from discoid lupus erythematosus. He remembers that his first significant panic attack occurred in the recording studio. He recalls that “I was convinced I was dying, having a heart attack, and was rushed to the hospital.”
He describes the panic episodes as extremely upsetting and the fear of having another is challenging and lonely. “It’s cold and lonely and dark,” he muses.
Still, Seal’s struggles made him more compassionate.
In addition, Seal says, “It gave me such empathy and understanding for people who can’t get help.”
“There’s no shame… there’s no guilt in asking for help and talking about it, whether it’s therapy or a friend,” she says, stressing how crucial it is to dispel the stigma. It must be distributed.
Seal finds exercise to be an effective way to manage her anxieties. “Exercise and mental health go hand in hand,” she says, acknowledging the difficulties experienced by those struggling with depression.

Additionally, meditation is incredibly helpful. “It was a huge help,” he continues.
Regardless of the challenges, Seal is grateful for the journey. I’m not crying because of my anxiety or my lupus as I sit here. The fact that I can sing with a voice that moves people is no accident. My goal is, I think, to communicate. That’s lucky.
