Serena Williams’ presence at the MET Gala was nothing short of spectacular as she graced the red carpet in a gorgeous black and white gown adorned with numerous pearls. Her husband, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, was equally impressive in his outfit. But what really stole the show that night was the couple’s unexpected reveal: Serena and Alexis were delighted to announce their second pregnancy during an interview with Vogue contributor La La Anthony.
This upcoming addition to their family is especially special as it will be Serena and Alexis’ second child, with their eldest, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr., bringing immense joy to their lives. Serena has always been open about her journey into motherhood, sharing her first birth experience and the profound impact it had on her.
Williams previously shared her first outdoor birth experience. Following the birth of her daughter Olympia in 2022, Williams revealed the terrifying moment she managed to save her life.
Williams discussed how standing up after giving birth saved her life in an article for Elle that she adapted from the anthology Arrival Stories: Women Share their Experiences of Becoming Mothers, edited by Amy Schumer and Christy Turlington Burns.
Williams said: “The stakes of the game have changed for me since I had a baby. Before the Olympics, my body was used exclusively for tennis.”
My body has been owned by tennis for a very long time. I know my body and I’ve experienced every injury imaginable,” she adds. “When I found out I was expecting two days before the 2017 Australian Open, my body had already changed its allegiance.”
Since the game’s main focus was on the development and upbringing of this child who seemed to be discovered by accident, my stakes have shifted now that I’m a parent. I am the only player still competing who has won 23 Grand Slams. However, success is now more of a desire than a requirement.
Although I still strive for titles, success, and respect, my beloved daughter living at home does not motivate me to get out of bed in the morning. The game is meant to teach players more than just winning, he adds.
“I learned to rise above setbacks, to defend what is essential at all costs, and to demand what is right – even if it puts others at odds. As it turned out, I had to test how many times and how loud I would have to shout, before anyone heard me.
She also mentioned that she had no emotional connection to Olympia before seeing Olympia’s child. “I was excited to finally meet my baby. I never felt a connection to her during my pregnancy.
“I enjoyed my pregnancy, but it wasn’t that fantastic. This is the sweetest thing I’ve ever seen, my god. People try not to discuss it because we’re expected to fall in love immediately.”
I didn’t faint for her, even though I was a fierce lioness who would do anything to protect her cub. Throughout my pregnancy, I looked forward to the time when I would feel like I knew her. I felt better when several of my mother’s friends acknowledged that they shared the same connection while still in the womb, but I still longed for it.
Being an athlete requires knowing when to give up and also knowing how to control and use your body’s strength. She said: “The energy in the room completely changed and I felt excited and relieved to let it go.” This difficult, seemingly endless journey gave us a clear plan to bring this child into the world.
Williams was able to reclaim her freedom as a result of her postpartum experience. “In the US, black women are about three times more likely to die during or shortly after childbirth. Many of these deaths, experts say, could have been prevented,” she argues.
“I realize that if the medical community paid attention to the experiences of every black woman, these percentages would be different, but being heard and getting the right care was the difference between life and death.
After several procedures, Williams continued, adding that none of the nurses around her “really listened to what I was saying” until she was able to talk to her doctor and request a CAT scan of her lungs.
“After a brave fight, I got a CAT scan. I appreciate her, she writes. A blood clot was discovered in my lung and the doctors had to put a filter in my veins to destroy it before it got to my heart.”
