I thought I’d take the love of my life. But what I heard that night made me question everything I knew about my marriage and my family.
It was just a regular evening of Thanksgiving when I went up to catch a few things from my children’s room. I knew a little, the words I heard broke my whole world. What was supposed to be a holiday of heat and joy has turned into a nightmare that revealed the dark secrets that were hidden directly under the nose.
After spending thanks to the new husband James in the house of our parents, I went up to get some things from my old room. When I realized I needed a box to pack them, I turned back to the stairs – but then I stiffened to the place.
I heard my mother, Patricia, whispered, “James, thank you again for getting married with her.”
Confused and nervous, I approached and tried to stay out of sight. I have heard James respond, occasionally as always: “You know, I would never get married if you didn’t give me …”
My stomach dropped. What money? And live with her? I felt stiff.
My mom cut him quickly and her voice was a sharp urgency. “Shh! James! She could hear us.”
James continued, “I’m just saying, the money is nice, but they live with her … that’s not what I applied for. I have to pay attention to it whenever the house is too quiet. And I have to watch everything she eats.”
I stood frozen and I couldn’t breathe.
“I told you,” my mom said, and her voice insisted. “She’s fragile. No one else should … you know. Just be patient, James. It won’t be forever. As soon as she gets more confident at work, you can leave.”
James mocked, “It’s like I was a broken doll you gave me to fix it.”
“Yeah, yeah, for sure. But don’t forget, Patricia, I expect the rest of the payment by Christmas. I won’t keep myself unless you hold your end.”
I got up, my legs were trembling and retreated to their children’s bedroom. My husband was paid for taking me his own mother.
As I sat in the room, I stared at the posters on the wall, everything I thought I knew about my relationship with James – sweet gestures, whispering promises – suddenly felt like a cruel joke.
Over the next few weeks, I pretended that everything was fine while revealing the truth quietly. When James worked late, I went through his belongings and found bank statements that clarified everything. From my mom’s account were marked with large deposits marked with vague notes as:
For expenses. The first installment. Final payment.
The revelation sent me a winding. James was not just for money; He relied on it.
In my e-mails, I discovered interviews with friends about gambling debts and maximum credit cards. My mother saved him in exchange for his marriage. I barely held it together. I was thinking about confronting them, but I knew it didn’t deserve a private and respectful discussion. They deserved worse.
Christmas Eve came and my mom hosted the usual family dinner, a house shining with a holiday – witnesses, cinnamon, cinnamon and soft carols playing in the background.
James and I arrived soon and carried gifts, one of which was carefully packed, but contained a damn truth. But I was shaking inside.
After the dessert I stood and held my “gift”.
“Before we get to sweets,” I said, forcing my voice to stay stable, “I’d like to give my mom something special.”
“Oh, honey, you didn’t have to!” Exclaimed: “Your happiness is the only gift I need.”
“Oh no,” I replied, “you definitely deserve it, Mom.”
She opened the packaging and found a lot of papers. When reading the first page, confusion turned into panic.
“Do you want to read it aloud, Mom?” I asked sweetly. “Or should I?”
The room was silent.
“I … I don’t understand. What’s that?” She asked.
“It’s a record of every payment you made James,” I said, my voice sharp and cut out the tension, “For taking me.”
James tried to speak, but my mom interrupted.
“Honey, I don’t know who told you, but …”
I raised my hand and both silenced.
“Save it,” I said, my voice cool.
My mom, pale and shaken, spoke first.
“Sweetheart, I did it for you!” She said quietly. “I didn’t want you to be alone. After your father cheated on me when you were a child, I had to live with loneliness. And you … you’re fragile, Claire. I did it because I wanted you to be happy.”
“You didn’t do it for me!” I shouted, my voice was angry with rage. “You did it because you think I don’t think I found someone myself! You wanted to control it? Well, congratulations, Mom. You bought me my husband.
James tried to intervene, but I wasn’t done.
“And as for you,” I continued, “I hope the money was worth it. Because you are not getting a penny from me. My mom can continue to be your bank for everything I care about. But this marriage ended.”
With that I grabbed the coat and walked out and let them deal with the fall of their lies.
Moon has passed since that night. I asked for divorce and James did not participate.
Since then I have barely talked to my mom. She tried to apologize with tearful texts and e -maly, but I’m not ready to forgive her.
Maybe I will never.
