The Hong Kong singer had struggled with depression for years, according to her sisters, who revealed the news of her death on Instagram on Wednesday.
CoCo Lee attempted suicide on Sunday and later died. She was 48 years old.
Carol and Nancy Lee, the singer-songwriter’s older sisters, took to social media on Wednesday to reveal that she had passed away earlier in the day. Carol and Nancy Lee were born in Hong Kong. In a message posted on Facebook and Instagram, they admitted that CoCo had struggled with depression for a number of years.
“CoCo had been depressed for several years, but her condition had dramatically worsened over the last few months,” the sisters claimed. We are here to bring you the most heartbreaking news: CoCo’s health has drastically deteriorated over the past three months. CoCo tried her best to fight the feeling of hopelessness and sought help, but the beast within eventually won.
They said: “She attempted suicide at home on July 2 and was taken to hospital.” Despite the best attempts of hospital staff to resuscitate and treat her while she was in a coma, she eventually died on July 5.
CoCo was a well-known pop artist in Asia who reached the peak of her career in the 1990s and early 2000s. When she signed with Sony Music Entertainment in 1996, her debut album CoCo Lee became the best-selling album in Asia that year, according to Reuters.
She later released albums in Cantonese and English after switching to Mandopop. She released her debut English album Just No Other Way in 1999. Her song “Do You Want My Love” peaked at number one on the US charts.
Her uplifting song “A Love Before Time” from the acclaimed film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2001. She sang the song live that year on the occasion.
Notably, the pop star also voiced Mulan, the warrior, in the Mandarin version of Disney’s Mulan, performing “Reflection,” the film’s theme song, in that language. In addition to Lee Xin’s No Tobacco and Master of Everything, she appeared in three films.
CoCo was married to Canadian businessman and former Li & Fung CEO Bruce Rockowitz. She was not the biological mother, but she was the stepmother of her husband’s two daughters.
On Instagram, CoCo’s sisters announced that her singing career will be 30 years old in 2023.
“CoCo is also known to have worked tirelessly to open up a new world for Chinese singers on the international music scene, and has done everything to shine for the Chinese people,” they said.
We are grateful and delighted to have such a beautiful and special sister as the CoCo family. We thank God for giving us an angel who is so kind.
Carol and Nancy praised the doctors and nurses who cared for their sister over the past three days and asked their followers to stay upbeat in honor of CoCo.
According to them, “We hope that everyone will continue to wish CoCo so that everyone around her will feel her love and happiness by not only missing her but also sharing her bright smile, treating people with sincerity, and expressing compassion and love to everyone around us .”
The sisters concluded by saying, “CoCo’s rays will last forever, even though she’s only been around for a short time.”
