The heartbreaking incident involving Australian exchange student Alex Shorey from Taiwan has taken a disturbing turn as Elly Chen, his employer, has come forward with her version of events and other details surrounding the case. Alex Shorey, 24, from Toowoomba, was working for Elly Chen as an English instructor for her online education programs when he became seriously ill just a month into his job.
In late March, Chen noticed that Shorey was exhibiting alarming symptoms, including nausea, vertigo, and nosebleeds. Concerned for his welfare, she decides to visit his apartment, only to discover blood stains on his pillow and handkerchief. Shocked by what she found, Chen urged Shorey to seek medical attention immediately. He recalls the moment and says, “I believe you should visit the emergency room.”
Chen, a 42-year-old mother of two, accompanied Shorey to the hospital, where he was evaluated for possible food poisoning before being released.
He refused, stating that he wanted to stay with his friend, but Chen offered to take him home so she could take care of him, as she cared for his well-being.
Chen continued to communicate with Shorey despite her decision, even though she last saw him on March 27. At this point, Shorey informed Chen that the severity of his condition prevented him from walking any further.
There was an uproar when it was learned in late April that Shorey was in serious condition at Taipei Medical University Hospital. Shorey’s family in Queensland launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for his medical evacuation to Brisbane, as they were concerned about his condition.

It is important to understand that Chen is not considered a suspect in the case, although police have contacted her to arrange an interview. This was most likely due to Chen taking Shorey to the hospital in the first place. Chen said: “They want to find me because I was the first to take him to the hospital.
Chen emphasized that she never communicated with Shorey’s acquaintance and never encountered rat poison while staying at his apartment.
Unverified allegations from Taiwan claim that an unidentified woman who attended the event confessed to mixing the drinks with rat poison.
However, unconfirmed reports from Taiwan suggest that the unnamed woman involved in the incident has confessed to making rat poisonous drinks. According to these reports, Shorey accidentally ingested a poisoned drink originally intended for her with the intention of taking her own life. Investigators are now skeptical of her account due to inconsistencies in her statements, leading them to believe she may have deliberately poisoned Shorey to prevent him from leaving Taiwan.
