Since then, the people of Pulaski County have publicly lamented the departure of their students. “The KHSAA member schools, their administrators, coaches, teachers, and supporters are a family. However, at the heart of it are the student-athletes. That family was Andrew Dodson. A tragedy like this cannot be explained, justified, or rationalized with words, according to a statement issued Monday published by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association.”

The message added: “We just pray for peace and comfort for everyone around him and around our beautiful Commonwealth.” We also urge everyone to reach out to family and friends so you can work through your feelings and emotions that come with losing a friend, brother, comrade, child, and teammate together at this difficult time.”

“We know that in the hours, days, weeks, months, and years to come, we will continue to remember his fighting spirit and passion for all things Pulaski County, as well as his deeply held beliefs about his time on earth and the afterlife,” the group they concluded in their statement. We offer our deepest condolences and keep his family and friends close at this difficult time.

Kentucky laments the departure of Andrew Dodson.

In addition to the Kentucky High School Athletic Association, Mark Stoops, the head football coach at the University of Kentucky, extended his sympathies to all who had the opportunity to know Dodson.

Dodson also isn’t the first Kentucky high school student to die from a football injury. Since June 16, 2020, when Matthew Mangine Jr. collapsed at St. Henry District High in Erlanger, his parents pushed for improvements to the high school curriculum that uses sideline safety.

Alan Dodson has vehemently supported these guidelines for schools across the country since his son’s death.

The loss of a young athlete like Andrew Dodson serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with contact sports and the importance of prioritizing player safety. It also emphasizes the need for ongoing evaluation and improvement of security measures within sports programs. As the community mourns the loss of promising young talent, their attention turns to honoring Dodson’s memory and ensuring that his passion for the game contributes to positive change in the future.
