Her debut was the role of Frances Elizabeth “Gidget” Lawrence in the film “Gidget”. Sadly, the sitcom was canceled after just one season due to lack of ratings.
She then had three seasons as the lead actress in “The Flying Nun”. She was reportedly going through a depressive phase at the time and hated her job on the show. I simply had to place my “I put my head down, went to work and did the best job I could,” she stated.
And that’s when you start to see that there’s a reason you’re overeating, but you’re trying to hide it. You try to mask your sadness. But I was unable to recognize my dreams or understand what was happening to me at that particular point in my life.”
In 1967, she made her film debut in “The Way West!” Then in 1977 she starred in the famous film “Smokey and the Bandit” with her then boyfriend Burt Reynolds. The film “Norma Rae” won her her first Oscar in 1979 and she played the main role. In 1984, she won her second Oscar for “Places in the Heart”. Her personal life
Steven Craig and Sally Field married in 1968 and had two boys, Peter and Eli. After their divorce in 1975, she married Alan Greisman in 1984.
Their only child together was Samuel, and they divorced in 1994. She dated Burt Reynolds from 1976 to 1980; he discusses their difficult relationship in his memoirs. She talks about his bullying behavior and how he convinced Field not to attend the Emmys where she was honored for “Sybil.” Reynolds actually died just before her book was published. In her biography, she also talks about the abuse she experienced at the hands of her stepfather, who often called her into his room when she was fourteen. In her letter, she wrote: “I felt like a child, helpless and not like a child.” “Power. This was power. And it was mine. But still I longed to be a child.”
Field later found out that her mother knew about the abuse all along, even though her husband lied and said it only happened once when he was drunk. Field told her it was “my whole childhood” when she wrote the memoir after her mother died. It was the only way I could find the pieces of my mother that were lost. I couldn’t forgive her until I realized that I had to understand her, if not forgive her. I wrote the novel to make amends with her.”
