She said it wouldn’t be pricey. She smiled when I mentioned my budget. And for a brief moment, I believed her.

That belief disappeared the second I opened a menu with no numbers on it.

A friend had invited me to a high-end steakhouse downtown—the kind of place where the lighting is low, the chairs are heavy, and prices are deliberately hidden to discourage hesitation. Before agreeing, I was clear. I told her I couldn’t afford an extravagant night out and would be ordering modestly. She waved off my concern, insisting it wouldn’t be a big deal.

I trusted her reassurance. That was my first mistake.

When it was my turn, I stayed true to my word. I chose a simple steak salad. No extras. No drink. When dessert came up, I declined without hesitation.

I smiled, made conversation, and tried to enjoy myself—but the discomfort lingered. I’d seen this pattern before. She loved luxury, and somehow the bill always became a shared responsibility, regardless of who ordered what.

When the plates were cleared, the waiter asked how we’d like the check.

She didn’t hesitate.

My stomach sank—but I didn’t argue. I didn’t explain. I didn’t push back.

“Sure,” I said calmly.

A minute later, she stood and excused herself to the restroom. As soon as she disappeared, I caught the waiter’s attention.

He paused. “All to go?”

“Yes. Please add them to this table.”

He nodded and walked away.

She returned just as the check was placed between us.

The total: $280.

Her smile faltered. “Wow… that’s a lot higher than I expected,” she said, staring at the receipt.

I looked at the number, then at her untouched confidence, and finally back at the bill.

“It adds up fast,” I said.

She laughed nervously. “I guess prices are just crazy now.”

I paid my half without hesitation, gathered my things, and stood up.

As I walked toward the exit, the waiter stopped me and handed over a bag filled with three neatly packed takeout containers—still warm.
