“Please, Mother, I promise to be good and kind. Please! This is all the money we have! We won’t have enough money for bread if I buy you these candies.”
Without thinking, I turned my head.
A modest woman, unkempt but groomed, holding a fair-haired girl with big blue eyes. “Please, you promised that Santa would come and bring us goodies this year…”
I had the cheese in my hand and stood motionless. A young girl had a bag of candies in her hands. I couldn’t believe the stories I heard were real as I stared at her. After leaving the bag of candy on the shelf, the child was dragged out of the room by her mother.
I hurried back to the popsicle stand. The child was holding a box of chocolates that cost $2. I loaded up a basket full of candy and of course, had to pass by the meat stand on my way to checkout. A child and a woman stared at the window where the products were displayed.
“- Eight slices of salami!” cried “Thin” and continued.
My heart froze.
I requested a salami stick and a pork pastrami stick from the other vendor.
I got to the register before them.
My eyes filled with tears.
I stood outside, in front of the market, and waited for them.
I gave the young girl a bag of candy:
“- Santa came here and left me this bag because you were in the store. Miss turned her large azure eyes on her questioning mother. The woman nodded in agreement. She exclaimed, “See, Mom, Santa Claus is real!”
It hurt, it left me stunned, and it made me happy all at once.
