Unknown Swamp
A charming lake house might seem like the perfect place to relax on a holiday in the English countryside. So TikTok user Robertibus expected to enjoy a beautiful holiday in the middle of nature when he booked an Airbnb in the Lake District for a family trip.
Little did he know that things would soon be much greener than he anticipated. When Robert first arrived at the house, everything was as he expected: comfortable sofas, a television, and a piano. However, in the middle of the carpet was a giant wooden door, half hidden behind the couch.
Robert was puzzled by the unexpected door and decided to investigate. After a quick shift on the sofa, he managed to open the terrifying cellar door. At first, they encountered only a staircase that led into complete darkness.
Robert descended the stairs with his favorite dog by his side for moral support and as he neared the bottom he was met with what appeared to be a sea of bright green hazardous waste – definitely none of the stuff listed on the rental site. advertisement!
Robert was initially as confused as the rest of us but went on to inform fans that the green water appeared to have been caused by the application of a staining solution designed to locate leaks. I guess you could say she accomplished her goal as the entire basement was neon green and flooded, although it seemed a little late to stop the leak!
@robertibus Not my usual content, but this was too spooky not to share. Was not expecting that! #spooky #unexpected #creepy #familyholiday ♬ Spooky, quiet, scary atmosphere piano songs – Skittlegirl Sound
Finding a bog hole, green or not, wasn’t the only disturbing experience Robert and his family had while at the house. After searching far and wide for the missing TV remote upon arrival, the very next morning there was an unexpected smack in the middle of the sofa. The water taps are said to have started turning on and off by themselves.
So was there something sinister lurking in that dirty green pit, or was it just a combination of faulty installation and forgetfulness?
Waterfront door
The appeal of most trapdoors lies in solving the mystery of what’s inside, but the key to this next hatch is actually discovering it!
Martin Zero, a history buff who spends time exploring Manchester in northern England, is responsible for discovering the trapdoor. Thanks to his expertise in the city’s hidden architecture, Martin learns that a secret river runs beneath Manchester called the River Tib.
That’s pretty awesome in itself, but why would a city have a river underneath it? Well, until it was covered during the Industrial Revolution in the late 19th century, the River Tib served as the border of the colony of Mancunium during the Roman era.
Towns and cities like Manchester found they needed a more efficient means of transporting commodities quickly during this manufacturing boom.
Canals were less prone to flooding and causing delays in transporting products because they offered more control over the flow and water level than a natural river. As a result, the Rochdale Canal, which runs through Manchester today, was built across the River Tib in brick.
Martin wasn’t sure what to believe, even though he had heard stories of a mythical trap door in the canal that led to the secret river Tib. According to legend, the trapdoor was erected to act as a plug when the Rochdale Canal needed cleaning. It was rumored to be located deep within Castle 89. But Martin, ever the historical explorer, demanded proof!
Martin learned from his research that there was concrete evidence of a trapdoor in the canal itself, and when he went to look, he actually discovered it. Martin was sure he had found the x that marked the trapdoor after noticing an arrow pointing to water carved into a concrete slab on the bank of the canal.
Despite this amazing discovery, Martin lamented that he would never get a chance to see the door – if it was there at all – as the water was too murky for him to see.
That is until he learned that lock 89 would one day be cleaned out. If it did exist, it indicated that the much-desired trapdoor drain would soon be discovered. Martin was able to photograph something incredible while wearing a helmet and holding a camera. Not only was the door confirmed to exist, but we also got an extremely rare glimpse of the trapdoor drain in action!
The trapdoor, which is more than 200 years old, acts as a plug through which water from the canal drops 16 to 20 feet into the disappearing River Tib before joining the much larger River Medlock.
While one might assume these trapdoors only hide water, they actually hide a 200-year-old world beneath, providing a window into Manchester’s vast history. Does anyone else want to go there and explore?

The bizarre discovery Reddit user ‘Asian Prometheus’ made after getting caught up in a naughty prank frenzy at primary school has been described by the user. As his punishment, he and another student were left in charge of cleaning the school gym while the rest of the class went on a field trip.
These young people were desperate for some excitement after being left alone and to themselves. When they saw a mysterious-looking panel below the stage, they knew the adventure was about to begin.
The boys could see that the small door had not been open for very long as a huge amount of dust covered it. But after some effort and persistence, they managed to pry it out. The boys were amazed to discover another entrance when they reached the shadows under the stage!
The trap door of course, in case you didn’t understand the title of the article! These guys, being the brave or potentially stupid kids they were, jumped through the trapdoor without thinking and landed ankle-deep in the water. In any case, they continued.
The boys realized they were under a brand new school playground for Kindergarten after darting down a gloomy tunnel into an even darker room. Even though there was a small window, they couldn’t see anything.
However, they were excited at the thought of emerging as a potential hidden hideout while still feeling the adrenaline rush from their trip! They quickly realized that the water on the floor was too deep to make effective use of the hidden spot, so they decided to leave and alert the teacher.
The school sent down a searchlight team to check what was hidden under the trap door after being confused by the boys’ revelation. What they discovered will blow your mind.
No one could foresee the horrors that lurked in the darkness, completely unknown to the boy, despite the conclusion that the underground bunker was nothing more than an old storm cellar.
Little did the boys realize that while they were in that dark space, several groups of eyes were staring at them through the shadows. The team sent there could see a number of highly disturbing wooden dolls in the dark room with the help of searchlights.
The boys didn’t stay there long enough to play their own version of Annabel, but it’s still unclear how the dolls got there and what happened to their owners. Most individuals wouldn’t stick around long enough to learn the answer.
Never ask about the trap door
You undoubtedly expect that your stay in a 2-star hotel will not be the most peaceful experience of your life. But when a guest at a 2-star hotel found something disturbing in their room — something that kept getting weirder and weirder — they got the heebie-jeebies fit for a 5-star hotel.
When Addison Cassel, who told her story on TikTok, first spotted the cut mark on the carpet downstairs, she was undressing in a hotel bed. She began to tug at it and was shocked to discover a hidden flap on the floor!
Addison didn’t expect to find anything down there since this particular hotel only had one level, but when she lifted the flap, she discovered an ominous underground crawling area! The area was quite small, covered in cobwebs, and seemed to have no particular use.
Even though there was nothing at the time, it was hard to ignore the fact that the area was almost exactly the right size for a human body. When she left the next day, Addison was still a little uneasy, but her curiosity got the better of her. When she contacted the hotel after checking out to inquire about the unexpected cavity in her room, things took a much stranger turn.
She was surprised to hear a really strange answer. Addison’s inquisitiveness clearly irritated the hotel receptionist, who answered every question that it was none of her business.
Finally, the receptionist abruptly ended the conversation by informing Addison that the crawl space under her room was only used for plumbing. Why did she act so dark about it when that was what it was really for? And if that wasn’t weird enough, we can see from Addison’s video that there are no pipes in this unsettling hole — just a wooden cross beam at the end.
Tailor’s door
Exploring the secret depths of forbidden places out of insatiable curiosity can be risky, but it can also lead to some truly remarkable discoveries.
Brennen Evangelista, a YouTuber with a love for exploring abandoned buildings, is one guy who can’t get enough of adventure. He shares this enthusiasm on his excellent Uncharted Travel channel.

While visiting the small community of Elice in central Italy in September 2018, Brennen came across something that made an already exciting excursion even more interesting.
A powerful earthquake that shook the Italian province of Abruzzo hit Elice in 2009. The population of Elice dropped from 2,000 to 800 shortly after the destruction, making it a virtual ghost town. Elice has a large number of empty villas left by evacuating families as a result of the earthquake.
After talking to several locals, Brennen managed to get to one such abandoned villa, which was occupied by a tailor and his family. Brennen discovers a variety of eerie abandoned personal items in the villa, including tailor’s craft materials, old photographs, and cracks in the tiles, likely caused by an earthquake.

While exploring the space, Brennen discovered a strange trapdoor with a lock in the corner of the kitchen. Brennen was shocked to find that the door was not locked. He was amazed at what he saw when he finally opened the hatch. Behind the door was a wooden staircase that led down into the unknown.
When Brendan got to the bottom, he discovered the contents of the cellar, which were covered in dust and signs of rot and had probably been abandoned by the family almost a decade before.
Since the villa was probably built in the 1400s, this cellar is likely to be hundreds of years old and has housed many families throughout its existence. Its last inhabitants had the misfortune to have their existence here tragically cut short by their evacuation, and everywhere there were poignant reminders of a precious home that had been hastily abandoned.
Throughout the space were numerous jars of spaghetti sauce, various ambiguous, decomposing canned goods, and half-filled kegs of house wine that served as haunting reminders of what would be used in the kitchen.
The whole event must have been creepy because we don’t know what the tailor or his family are doing today or why they never came back for their things. Phantoms of things past are all that remain.
Horror tunnels
How about a trapdoor that reveals the history of an entire nation, unlike the previous one whose content was rooted in family history? The trapdoor I’m about to tell you about may resemble something out of a found footage horror movie, but the reality inside is even scarier than anything you could ever imagine.
The Cu Chi Tunnels, a network of underground tunnels used by soldiers during the Vietnam War, are pictured below at one of their entrances. Trapdoor tunnel entrances that are virtually invisible when closed and covered by foliage allow communist Vietnamese soldiers, or “Viet Congs,” to remain hidden from enemy forces.
The 75-mile Cu Chi Tunnels, which are still accessible today, are located in and around Saigon, now known as Ho Chi Minh City. Ranging in size from one to four stories, these tunnel complexes contained all the facilities the military would need to function, including kitchens, hospitals, and other rooms.
In addition, there were many traps in the tunnels, including hidden barbed traps. These were ready to welcome any anti-communist Vietnamese fighters or Americans unfortunate enough to be tasked with controlling the underground tunnels.
The Cu Chi tunnels were protected from aerial bombardment, but conditions inside were dire. Food and water were scarce and the tunnels were often infested with rats, spiders, scorpions, and snakes. But that wasn’t the worst yet!
The difficulty of breathing underground was one of the most difficult parts of tunnel life. The vents in the tunnels were artfully hidden, as was the one below that looked like a termite mound.
However, it was still absolutely stuffy downstairs and the stale air almost always gave me migraines and dizziness. Furthermore, infection spreads rapidly in such claustrophobic, heated conditions; as a result, malaria overtook battle wounds as the second leading cause of death.
In addition, the darkness of some tunnels was so complete that many long-term residents of the underground were even temporarily blinded when they returned to the light.
More of a hole than you
How about a haunted cellar hidden inside a haunted attic, if all the talk of hidden tunnels and cellars isn’t creepy enough for you?
Badgal-beep-beep, a TikTok user in the UK, discovered double the perils of loft conversion when she came across a strangely creaky floorboard in the corner of the boarding school her mother runs. Badgal found a hole with a ladder leading into the unknown by pulling back the carpet and removing a black wooden block from the floor.
A badgal by name and a badgal by nature, the TikToker fearlessly climbed the rungs of the ladder and arrived at a bunker that appeared to be inhabited. Despite the trash in the area and the absence of a hideout, the badgal searched for information.
A TikTok user discovered a hidden trapdoor in her mother’s boarding school that led to a loft conversion with a disturbing secret. A trapdoor revealed a priest’s hole, used during the persecution of Catholics in England in the 16th and 17th centuries. This hidden chamber had a long history, but more recently served as a secret place for boarding school parties, including soda cans, snack wrappers, and empty alcohol bottles. The eerie atmosphere of the priest’s hole remained, accentuated by the remnants of history and youthful mischief.

The final set of hatches in our trapdoor survey shows that sometimes it’s not what’s hidden underneath, but rather what’s revealed. The manhole covers depicted represent a variety of intricate and artistic designs found in cities around the world. Often unnoticed by passers-by, these covers serve as functional pieces of urban art. They represent a fusion of functionality and aesthetics and demonstrate the beauty that can be found in unexpected places.
In conclusion, trapdoors never cease to capture our curiosity, whether they lead to hidden cellars, historical secrets, or forgotten worlds. Each discovery offers a unique insight into the mysteries that lie beneath the surface, reminding us that sometimes the most interesting stories are found where we least expect them.
