Three children freed from home after ‘COVID syndrome’ parents confined them for 4+ years

What adds to the growing suspicion is the presence of machetes reportedly used for discipline within the household, a detail that has left neighbors and investigators perplexed.

The reasons behind the adoption of such extreme measures by these children remain unclear, leading to speculation about whether underlying psychological issues or external factors contributed to their behavior.

Some residents have murmured about eerie sounds and sporadic flickering lights observed from the windows during the extended period of seclusion, sparking speculation about clandestine and potentially unsettling activities occurring within the confines of the locked doors.

As investigators delve further into the enigma, the veil of secrecy surrounding the family’s self-imposed confinement becomes increasingly ominous, suggesting a convoluted network of fear, manipulation, and denial intricately woven by the pandemic’s influence.

Even after the official lockdown restrictions were lifted, three children were found living in conditions that resembled a prison, as their parents had imposed extreme confinement on them.

A family from Germany living in Spain has been held in custody for allegedly confining their three children and implementing strict regulations, such as the use of machetes, for the past four years.

On monday, april 28, the siblings—eight-year-old twins and their ten-year-old brother—were abruptly rescued from the so-called ‘house of horrors’ in oviedo, where they had been confined since approximately december 2021.

After being released, the authorities observed the children behaving strangely outside, showing a newfound interest in simple things like snails, as if they were experiencing the outdoors for the first time.

The researcher mentioned to the New York Post: ‘despite their initial fear, all three children started to take deep breaths, as if they had never experienced the outdoors before.’.

The government intervened after a concerned neighbor informed them on April 14 that the children had been absent from school for an extended period, as reported by El Comercio.

Initially, the Oviedo Police Chief Javier Lozano did not show any immediate concern. However, upon reviewing surveillance footage, it was discovered that only the 53-year-old father left the house to purchase food and mail, which raised suspicions.

Neighbors argued that the family had not departed from the house since late 2021.

Upon the arrival of the police, the father willingly granted them access. Inside, they discovered the mother—a 48-year-old German-American—wearing three masks, one for each child.

She cautioned the authorities to exercise caution, stating that the children were in a state of severe illness.

Within the house, law enforcement officials found a surplus of illegal substances and face masks, in addition to large amounts of garbage, resulting in a situation that was deemed ‘unhealthy’ by authorities.

José Ramón Prado, the city’s public safety advisor, described the environment as ‘pathogenic.’.

Despite their tender age, the children resided in a haven of plush cushions, surrounded by defaced dolls and monsters.

Additional investigations uncovered that the children exhibited no symptoms of illness.

During a press conference, lozano referred to the property as the ‘house of horrors.’ Another officer informed el mundo that the children’s conditions were shocking.

‘they were not malnourished because they were eating, but they were dirty and completely isolated from reality—not just because they hadn’t attended school,’ the officer said

He mentioned, ‘when we took the kids out of the house and brought them to the gardens, they refused to enter and became extremely frightened when they spotted a fly.’.

Ever since then, the children have been sent to a youth care facility, while their parents are still in custody awaiting trial without being granted bail.

The parents, who were reportedly experiencing ‘covid syndrome,’ have been accused of domestic violence, psychological abuse, and child neglect, as reported by the oviedo police department, according to abc.

Lozano stated, ‘we have all been affected by covid syndrome and the repercussions of the pandemic.’ We will examine the reasons behind a family’s decision to stay confined for an extended period of time.

In summary, this distressing case serves as a stark reminder of the severe repercussions that unfounded fear and misinformation about covid-19 can have on families. The extended period of seclusion and harsh treatment inflicted upon the children, supposedly for their safety, led to significant psychological and social harm. The authorities’ intervention has provided these children with a safer environment to recover, while ongoing investigations delve into the parents’ actions. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the significance of maintaining a balanced approach to health measures and ensuring effective community oversight to safeguard vulnerable individuals from harm.
