It’s hard to put into words how one feels when one becomes a parents for the first time. The vast majority of us are excited when we find out we’re going to be parents, either mums or dads-to-be.
Our first thoughts are naturally full of hope. We can imagine our baby’s arrival, dream of the lessons or experiences we will share with them, and look forward to the feeling of holding them for the first time.
Unfortunately, not every pregnancy turns out to be the happy experience that most of us hope for. Phoenix, Arizona native Carlos Morales is no stranger to this brutal reality, and his story is a poignant example of life’s poignant dichotomy.
Carlos and Erica Morales seemed like the perfect couple. The couple met at a nightclub in Scottsdale, Arizona, and started dating in 2006. Despite the language barrier — Carlos doesn’t speak English and Erica doesn’t speak Spanish — they were clearly attracted to each other.
Carlos and Erica are said to have danced most of the night away on their first date. Carlos gave Erica his phone number written on a piece of paper after the nightclub closed.
But then she lost the document that could have been the last straw between them. But fate had other ideas. Mutual friends brought Carlos and Erica back together and it didn’t take long for them to see the sincerity of their love for each other. Carlos demonstrated his commitment by learning English to converse with Erica, who was studying Spanish.

The couple began their journey to becoming parents in 2007 after exchanging vows in a ceremony in Las Vegas. Tragically, the couple’s first attempt at parenthood ended in miscarriage. After undergoing fertility treatment, Erica became pregnant again, and this time the couple was in for a huge surprise.
Doctors found out that Erica was expecting four babies on her first scan! Carlos and Erica spent several months preparing to become parents of quadruplets. Erica was tired of carrying four children, so Carlos tried his best to take care of her while also taking care of other household chores like cleaning and cooking.
On March 1, 2015, ABC15 Arizona published an article. Erica was admitted to the hospital on January 12, 2015, due to hypertension. She told Carlos that the doctors would deliver the babies soon because she was still having contractions before he arrived.
When Carlos got there, he and Erica took photos and videos to commemorate the occasion. Carlos planted a kiss on Erica’s cheek before she left for the delivery room, whispering, “Let’s get the babies out.”
Little did he know how much this day would change his life. Carlos revealed that a C-section was used to deliver the quadruplets – three girls and one boy.
Carlos said, “We were so excited to start our family,” per Yahoo. “And then it all came crashing down. Immediately after giving birth, Erica went into hypovolemic shock, a condition characterized by significant blood and fluid loss. When the alarm went off as Carlos sat by his wife’s bedside, the nurses rushed over. The new father was told to wait outside while medical staff attended to his wife. An hour later, the doctor returned and told Carlos that Erica had died.

He asked, “How could this happen?” She was fine for a while; then she wasn’t. She disappeared while still alive. The next morning I had the worst day of my life after enjoying the best day of my life. My wife died after the birth of my four children.”
Carlos spoke to his late wife and they named their children Carlos Jr., Paisley, and Tracey. The third child he named was “Erica”. On January 16, 2015, the grieving father was allowed to take his two children home from the hospital. The other two were allowed to return home on March 11.
Despite his deep sense of sadness and anguish that his beloved had died, Carlos understood that he had to be there for his children. Attending baby care classes taught the father of four how to clean up after his babies, feed them when they were hungry, and how to manage their sleep. He also completed CPR training.
Sondra Bridges, Erica’s mother, later moved in with Carlos to help him take care of her grandchildren. “It’s funny how things happen,” Sandra remarked. “It’s bittersweet but it’s been phenomenal thanks to God and a lot of support from the public.” I would also like to thank each and every one of you.
