In the serene city of Qonce, South Africa, a deeply unsettling event transpired just last month, leaving the community in shock and sorrow. Nkosentsha Njimbana, a 58-year-old man residing in the area, encountered a swarm of bees that mysteriously descended upon his humble abode. Astonishingly, instead of seeking refuge or exterminating the intruding insects, Nkosentsha willingly allowed them entry, firmly convinced that these buzzing creatures were emissaries sent by his ancestors, delivering messages from the otherworldly realm.
This peculiar conviction held by Nkosentsha can be traced back to a traditional belief shared by some South Africans, which asserts that departed loved ones possess the ability to manifest themselves in the physical realm through the embodiment of bees. Intrigued by this phenomenon and yearning for a connection with his ancestors, Nkosentsha sought guidance from a spiritual healer renowned in the community.
The revered healer, recognizing the significance of the situation, recommended a Xhosa ritual known as ‘ukugxotha iinyosi,’ an ancient practice designed to establish communication with the deceased.

Mandla Njimbana, the younger brother of the deceased, shared his profound anguish over the incident, grappling with the perplexing notion that their ancestors may have harbored anger toward Nkosentsha. “This is the most agonizing affliction to befall our family,” Mandla expressed with a heavy heart. “We fail to comprehend why our ancestors, whom he wholeheartedly welcomed, unleashed such fury upon him. He never resorted to violence or aggression in their presence.”
Loyiso Nqevu, a representative from the esteemed Inkolo Kantu Traditional Organisation, offered insights into this tragic event, echoing Mandla’s sentiment. The organization, which safeguards and preserves traditional beliefs and practices, supported the theory that the wrath of the ancestors might have been the cause of Nkosentsha’s untimely demise.
