Ohio Deputy Fatally Shot Responding to Domestic Call on Memorial Day
A solemn tragedy struck the heart of Ohio on Memorial Day when a young sheriff’s deputy was killed in the line of duty during what began as a routine response to a domestic disturbance in Marengo.
Deputy Daniel Weston Sherrer, aged 31, was fatally shot while responding to the call in the small Morrow County town located roughly 35 miles northeast of Columbus.
The Morrow County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Deputy Sherrer was critically injured at the scene and later died at the hospital despite efforts to save him.
Sheriff John L. Hinton addressed the heartbreaking incident in a public statement, saying, “There are no words to describe the pain our office is enduring.” The suspect involved in the shooting was also wounded and is currently hospitalized in serious condition.
Sherrer had been a member of the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office since May 16, 2021, and was known among colleagues for his dedication and professionalism. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, along with the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, has taken over the ongoing investigation into the incident.
