Mulan’s Mandarin voice actor Coco Lee has died at the age of 48. Coco Lee played Mulan in the Disney film of the same name.
Born in Hong Kong, Coco eventually moved to the US to attend school in San Francisco.
One of the first Chinese singers to gain popularity in the US after winning the Miss Teen Chinatown title in 1991 was Coco, whose song “Do You Want My Love” peaked at number four on Billboard’s Hot Dance Breakout chart in 1999.
Coco, who attempted suicide at her home on Sunday, has sadly died at the age of 48. Her sisters Carol and Nancy discovered her and immediately took her to the hospital.
According to the publication, Coco had struggled with depression for many years before deciding to commit suicide in recent months when her condition worsened. It was there that she fell into a coma and died on Wednesday.
She kept an Instagram journal of her struggles, and her latest post from December is now very tragic.
Coco shared a photo of the word “love” tattooed on her wrist, captioning it: “Life has seemed unbearable at times, but I’ve adapted a ‘warrior’ attitude to face them fearlessly and always have the biggest smile and big fat laugh!”
“My goal in 2023 is to share my life story and how I faced significant life-changing obstacles while maintaining a positive attitude,” she said. I am happy to announce that I am now living my authentic life. It’s the most beautiful feeling and I’m grateful every day to be alive and communicate with you [sic].”
