Some memories just scare us into trying to make sense of mysterious events from the past.

People on the Internet discuss the spooky and unusual events that really scare them.

The stories here may sound like something out of a thriller, but the people who tell them are real.

When I woke up in the middle of the night as a child, my bed was shaking. This should have scared me, but instead, it just annoyed me a little. I slipped and whispered, “Stop.”

The shaking stopped immediately. But what really scared me was what came next: a calm, deep male voice next to me murmured, “Sorry.” My childhood home was haunted, I think.

When my parents were at work, I was about twelve years old and I was taking care of my younger brother.

As I was heading to the garage to pick up something, I heard a whisper, “Come here.” Frightened, I picked up my brother and ran upstairs to our room to call my neighbor.

When we looked around the house, nothing was there.

I was stupid, I realized eventually, but the memory still sends chills down my spine.

I was maybe six or seven years old. I used to own one of those old-school sofas with shiny gold buttons on either end. My mom had my kitties while she was on the phone with my dad from overseas in the hallway.

I was looking at my reflection in the bed knob as I lay in bed. I could almost see because I had a night light. Looking at my reflection, I noticed a figure behind me climbing over the edge of the bed. I watched as the creature reached out as if to grab me and grab my ankle.

I looked over my shoulder at that moment, but nothing was there. I was so scared that I jumped out of bed, turned on the lights, and started looking around my bedroom. Nothing. My mom and the kitties were in the hallway when I came out. For the next two weeks, I shared a bed with my mom until my dad came back. Even now, I still avoid looking in mirrors at night and still much prefer to use a night light.

I once felt my father’s presence in my room when I woke up in the middle of the night when I was fourteen. I might even perceive him the way you perceive ghosts—blurred and glimpsed out of the corner of your eye.

The truth is, my dad is still very much alive and never died. He always said, “I’m going away,” and then there was the sound of a fence closing and a car speeding away. Between October 2000 and December 2000, this happened about three times.

In fact, my father left us in February 2001.

About a week before he told us he was going, it stopped.

I have had a number of experiences, some involving entities that resembled spirits and others that looked like they might be extraterrestrial. At about two in the morning, while I was trying to sleep and scrolling through Tumblr, the worst thing that ever happened to me happened.

I saw an ominous-looking arm trying to grab my leg.

My vision blurred as I moved to the edge of the bed to see what it was. My exact words at the time were “Forget it, I don’t want to see what it was.” Whatever it was, it was blocking my view to get away.

The night my father-in-law died, my husband and I stayed with my mother-in-law so she wouldn’t have to deal with it alone. Recently someone moved the rocking chair in the corner of the room where we lived.

We fell asleep and I seem to remember that when I woke up my father-in-law was rocking back and forth watching us sleep and he had a beautiful smile on his face.

I was dreaming and still sleeping when I found myself floating above the bed and my father-in-law watching us sleep.

It was quite honest and not dream-like at all, although it felt like an out-of-body experience. I also had complete peace and well-being.

At night. I was in the next room when I heard the typical click of the stereo. I went to the room it was in and saw it quickly run full speed as I stood in the doorway. It was the type where the numbers were displayed digitally and you had to turn the dial to increase.

It happened several more times. exclusively at night.

only in the absence of other people. I would hold out until it was done.

Right after high school, I moved home with my sister and grandfather to take care of their child.

My grandfather and my nephew had a close relationship.

My nephew, who was six months old at the time, a few months after I moved in, stopped babbling in the same way he did with my grandfather.

My nephew would often leave the room he was in late at night and walk around outside as if he were talking to his grandfather. Then he went to the same position in the front living room, tried to put the toys on something that wasn’t there, and looked at it. When I went to pick him up one day, he turned to face me and waved “Papa bye-bye” in the direction he always spoke.

He never did it again after that.

When I lived in a basement apartment downtown, they covered the bathroom door with those window bricks so there was enough light to see through.

My lover was standing at the foot of the bed, near the bathroom door, when I woke up one night. I rested my hands on my hips and bided my time.

I instructed him to go back to bed when he didn’t move and I rolled over to go back to sleep.

Finding that my lover had not slept that night, I immediately sat up straight; the figure disappeared.

When I was younger, I often had fevers. The drugs had no effect. A stranger on the street once asked my mother who was the elderly person following me and if I was always unwell. There was no senior in the area which confused my mother.

The stranger described my late paternal grandmother’s appearance in detail, including her hairstyle and the dress she wore at the grave, and pointed into the air.

Since my mom and dad didn’t live in the same town, she would have known if the stranger was a mutual friend. My dad was told by the stranger to call grandma and come back.

My inexplicable fevers subsided.

My brother and I were staying at a hotel in Greece. I noticed a flash of white light across the post of my bed as I continued to stare at it. At first, I ignored the light, assuming it was my brother’s phone.

Then I saw it again. It was clear to me that my brother wasn’t using his phone when I turned to him in bed. It was a forest outside, the TV was off and the blinds on our one window were drawn. I still can’t figure out where the light came from.

One night one of my friends was taking a shower in her dorm room. Her dorm was housed in a structure that was about a century old, and many spooky things had happened there over the years. Suddenly, while my friend is taking a shower,… BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG!

It sounded like the door was about to collapse. My friend jumped out of the shower while it was still banging and tore open the door to discover her empty room. Her bedroom door was also closed.
