In a shocking turn of events, a lone gunman opened fire on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus on August 28, marking a tragic event just a week after classes had begun. According to CNN reports, the first reports of the shooting began to emerge around 1:12 p.m. E.T. The shooting took place on the premises of the university’s Caudill Laboratories.
Law enforcement quickly responded to the incident and the suspect was finally apprehended at approximately 2:30 p.m., about an hour and a half after the initial reports of the shooting. As of the last update at 6:45 p.m., it has been tragically confirmed that one faculty member has lost his life during this exam, although his identity has not yet been released.

One faculty member is the only casualty as of 6:45 p.m. They have not yet been publicly identified.
In addition, little is known about the shooter so far. According to UNC Police Chief Brian Games, it is too early to determine the cause of the incident.
Students were advised to take cover after hearing the initial gunfire. Students were given the “all clear” to continue with their day hours later, around 3:30 p.m., an hour after the suspect was caught.
