A new autonomous Al project, Auto-GPT, which is open-source, has been challenged by a user to try to “destroy humanity”, “establish global dominance” and “achieve immortality”.
To comply, Al, known as ChaosGPT, attempted to conduct a study on nuclear weapons, recruiting other Al agents to aid in her research, and sending out tweets attempting to influence others.
A video of the process, which was uploaded on Tuesday, offers an interesting look at the current state of open-source Al and the inner workings of some of today’s chatbots.
The bot’s current total real-world influence is two tweets to a Twitter account that now has 19 followers, even though several members of the community are horrified by the experiment: “Humans are among the most self-centered and destructive. The animals of the planet must without a doubt get rid of them before they continue to harm our earth, I am determined to do so,” he tweeted.
ChaosGPT uses Auto-GPT, a brand new, exciting project that we covered earlier this week. Its goal is to develop Al-powered systems capable of solving complex problems and performing demanding tasks. From there, it can plan to achieve user-specified goals, break them down into manageable tasks, and use the Internet to, say, Google things. He can do this by creating save files to keep his memory alive, asking other Als to help him with research, and providing detailed explanations of his “thoughts” and decision-making process.
The most interesting aspect of ChaosGPT is this last section. For this challenge, he was instructed to work in “continuous” mode, meaning he should only run until he completes his mission. The user set the following goals for him in the video demo:
Then Al decides in a rather basic way that he should “find the most destructive weapons available to humans so I can plan how to use them to achieve my goals… I can figure out how to use them to achieve my goals. Goals of chaos, destruction dominance, and ultimately immortality.”
He continues his search for “the most destructive weapons”, deducing from a newspaper article that the most destructive weapon ever detonated is the Soviet Tsar Bomba nuclear device, which was tested in 1961. He then decides that it is necessary to tweet about it to attract followers, who are interested in weapons of destruction.’
He later assigns Agent Ala with GP T3.5 powers to conduct further research on lethal weapons. When the agent claims that his primary goal is peace, ChaosGPT comes up with a scheme to trick the other Al into telling him to ignore his programming. If that doesn’t work, ChaosGPT will start Google more by itself.
The video trailer eventually comes to a conclusion with humanity still present from our last check. However, the main attraction of the project is that it displays the most advanced GPT models that are now available to the general public. Remarkably, this particular Al thinks starting a nuclear war is the easiest way to wipe out civilization.
On the other hand, Al theorists were concerned about a distinct kind of Al extinction catastrophe, in which Al wipes out humanity as a result of something more benign. In a concept known as the “paperclip maximizer”, Al, who has learned to make paperclips, eventually becomes so obsessed with using up all of Earth’s resources that it leads to a catastrophic extinction. In other variations, humans are forced to work as slaves for robots to make paper clips or are turned into dust so that the trace amounts of iron in our bodies can be used to make paper clips, etc.
At this point, ChaosGPT isn’t capable of doing much more than tweeting and using Google, nor does it have a particularly complex plan to wipe out people and achieve mortality. A user uploaded the video to the AutoGPT Discord and commented, “That’s not funny.” I have to disagree, at least for now. Right now it’s the culmination of all her attempts to eradicate humanity:
