VA Reports Historic 57% Reduction in Backlog, But Questions Remain

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) recently announced a dramatic decline in the backlog of veterans awaiting compensation and pension benefits. A claim is considered backlogged if it remains unresolved for more than 125 days. Since January 20, the backlog has fallen from 264,717 to 112,353—a 57 percent decrease.

The improvement follows a record-setting fiscal year 2025, during which the VA processed 3,001,734 disability compensation and pension claims, surpassing the previous record of 2.49 million claims.

Between October 1, 2024, and February 20, 2025, the VA processed 1 million disability claims, marking its fastest pace for the period in history. July 2025 was particularly notable, with just over 300,000 claims processed in a single month—the highest monthly total ever recorded.

In addition, the VA distributed $195 billion in compensation and pension payments to more than 6.9 million veterans and survivors during fiscal year 2025.

“VA is constantly raising the bar for customer service and convenience,” said VA Secretary Doug Collins. “Our record claims processing productivity proves these efforts are effective. Veterans deserve fast and accurate claims decisions, and we remain committed to delivering outstanding results for those who have served.”

Analysts, however, caution that the reduction in the backlog may not fully reflect faster processing. Some suggest that changes in how claims are categorized could be contributing to the numbers, with certain complex cases potentially deferred or classified differently. Independent observers are calling for a closer look at the criteria used to define “backlogged” claims to ensure that every veteran is receiving timely, accurate decisions.

For context, the backlog peaked in March 2013 at 611,000 pending claims. By November that year, the VA had reduced it by 34 percent. The lowest backlog on record was 64,738 in December 2019.
