‘I definitely sound much worse than I feel,’ Kilmer said in the documentary. ‘I can’t speak without plugging this hole \[in my throat]. You have to choose whether to breathe or to eat. It’s a constant, visible obstacle.’

His final screen appearance was a moving cameo in Top Gun: Maverick in 2022, where technology was used to replicate his voice. Speaking about the emotional experience, Tom Cruise said in a 2023 interview with Jimmy Kimmel: ‘I’ve known Val for decades. Watching him become that character again was incredibly moving—he’s such a powerful actor.’
