What began as a routine morning flight quickly turned into a tense ordeal shortly after takeoff for American Airlines Flight 1665.
Departing from Las Vegas en route to Charlotte, the flight encountered a sudden engine failure that transformed an ordinary journey into a scene of alarm and uncertainty for everyone on board.
Carrying 153 passengers and six crew members, the flight took off at approximately 7:57 a.m. on Wednesday.
Despite the mid-air emergency, the pilots managed to safely land the aircraft back at Harry Reid International Airport by 8:23 a.m. Observers on the ground were immediately drawn to the unsettling sight and sound of smoke and loud noises emanating from the plane.
Richard Pedrosa, who was working at a nearby construction site, recalled the moment vividly. “I thought, ‘This is it—it’s going to blow up,’” he said. “I was scared because I had never seen anything like that before.”

Across Las Vegas, residents and passersby heard booming explosions and saw a trail of smoke billowing behind the aircraft as it circled back toward the airport. Social media videos captured the dramatic scene, showing flames flickering from the compromised engine.
Mark Jackson, who happened to be in a parking lot, initially mistook the loud sounds for fireworks. “Once I realized what was really happening, I felt a deep concern for those onboard—it must have been terrifying,” he shared.
