Betty Dunn Smothers, Dunn’s mother, was a police officer in Louisiana. She was murdered while doing her second job as a security guard. She was driving the patrol car and wearing her uniform when the store manager and Corporal Smothers went to the bank to deposit the money. As they sat in the car, three men opened fire, killing Corporal Smothers and wounding the manager. It happened a few days before her eldest son Warwick Dunn celebrated his birthday.
Dunn’s five younger siblings already looked up to him as a father figure. “I never really had a childhood,” he said in a 1994 interview with the Los Angeles Times. babysitting.”
Dunn and his siblings received a trust fund of over $200,000 from friends and other law enforcement officials. “I started talking and for the first nine months I never looked my counselor in the eye,” Dunn said. “But over the years, as I was putting my life back together, I got to the point where I wanted to go and sit with the man who shot and killed my mother. Once I felt comfortable and able to express myself, I was able to see face her and talk to her. I wanted to regain that control and bring more peace into my life, and that’s why I wanted to talk to him.”
“That guy” was Louisiana death row inmate Kevan Brumfield. Although Dunn hoped to appear contrite, Brumfield did not. Still, Dunn gave up his grudge. Deposits, all equipment, and other essentials for new homes are provided by the Homes for the Holidays program. In the initial year of the program, three families were accommodated. In an effort to expand services and initiatives, Dunn also founded Warrick Dunn Charities in 2002. Thanks to this organization, more than 200 families with single parents are now accommodated. “The more I learned, we wanted to get into business to give people the potential to break their cycle of poverty,” Dunn said. “Over the past 21 years, I’ve just learned a lot about the different issues that people face.”
As a result, the program works with other entities such as financial institutions, community development organizations, and Habitat for Humanity, which helps build homes for low-income families. “We’ve come up with services that can really help give families the tools to have some long-term stability, and that’s related to financial literacy, health and wellness, educational attainment, and workforce and business development,” Dunn said.
Since then, Warrick Dunn Charities has grown to include three new programs: Count on Your Future, Sculpt, and Hearts for Community Service. These programs offer financial literacy, wellness, and health education, and college scholarships to students involved in community service. According to Dunn, these initiatives can help fight poverty and improve the living standards of poor families.
