The newfound wealth would open up a world of opportunities for me to pursue my passions, positively impact the lives of others, and secure my future. Here is how I would navigate this exciting journey.
What would you do if you suddenly became a millionaire?
There are many possible answers to this question, but I don’t think any of them will involve “giving away all your money.” Real millionaires and remarkable couples, they want to do just that.
I mean Cliff Obrecht, her fiance and co-founder of Canva, and Melanie Perkins, Australia’s youngest billionaire.
Perkins is now Australia’s third-richest woman thanks to her $2.5 billion personal fortune from Canva. The website allows users to create their own social media graphics, invitations, posters, and other materials.
Its assets doubled in a matter of months due to the pandemic’s impact on remote workers and Canvas stock.
This power couple has every right to live a life of luxury considering the many years of effort it took to reach their current level of wealth.
The 32-year-old digital design mogul regularly shares photos of her opulent travels on social media, sometimes alongside Obrecht. The pair have been to Cappadocia, Turkey, Richard Branson’s private island Necker in the British Virgin Islands, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Since its launch in 2014, Canva has grown every year. The company, which values itself at $6 billion, has expanded its operations to Beijing and Manila.
Obrecht popped the question to Perkins while they were traveling to Turkey with a $30 ring. They claim to lead a relatively modest life despite the huge amount of money their graphics company has given them.
Moreover, he said that rather than spending their billions on themselves, they want to donate them to the “greater good”.
“Mel and I vowed to give away everything we own to make the world a better place,” they said. “I think it’s our responsibility when we’re running such a massive company with such a significant award to use it to be a force for good and make the world a better place rather than just accumulating s**t,” he told The Australian.
They plan to use their money to help things like global health reform.
We maintain a modest standard of living and do not see the benefits of building wealth. The company’s main goal is education because, in Obrecht’s words, “we believe that teaching poor individuals allows them to break the established pattern.”
Perkins also believes that by exercising power in the economic sphere, he can promote better equality for the disadvantaged.
Perkins told the Daily Mail that while resting on her mother’s sofa, she was inspired to start her own graphics company. At the time of the incident in 2005, she was a first-year university student studying digital media.
She loved it and gained amazing skills from it. Perkins’ expertise in graphic design has led to requests for her to lead seminars for students from various institutions.
In 2007, she came up with the concept of developing simple graphic design software that would allow schools and students to create their own yearbooks. She had no business or marketing knowledge, but she had the confidence to build a company from the ground up.
“My lover became my co-founder,” she said, “and we started in my mother’s living room.” “In some ways, our naivety helped us… If I had known then everything I know now, it would have been terrifying.
As they say, the rest is history. 190 countries currently have more than 4 million Canva users.
Becoming an overnight millionaire is an incredible opportunity, but it also comes with a lot of responsibility. The core of my actions would be wise asset management, following personal passions, and positive change in the world. With a strategic and purpose-driven approach, I would strive to leave a lasting legacy far beyond my own life.
