“When My Teen Son Acquired New Clothes and Headphones, He Claimed They Were from His Father—So I Decided to Track Him Down”

When Cathy notices that her son has new headphones and is dressed in new clothes, she is confused. One day she decides to follow him because she is interested in who or where he gets things from. When she recognizes this, it transports her back to her early years.

My son Alex has been dressing up in new clothes that I didn’t buy for him and I just now started to notice. I noticed yesterday that he had fresh headphones hanging around his neck.

“Honey, where did you get your headphones?” she asked as she made breakfast.

“From dad,” he wrote back, shouting.

“And the clothes too?”

“Um,” he mumbled. “Yeah.”

It made sense; I was divorced from Alex’s dad, Lan, and we kept giving Alex new things, so it was hard to watch.

Lan was still a sensible man. When I went shopping, I was the one shopping. No Lan. Alex always received high-quality gifts from him, especially clothes. However, never mentioned brands; Lan thought spending it on them was a waste of money.

The fact that Alex was wearing all his new clothes made me suspicious.

Lan spoke into the phone, “Cathy, I don’t know what to tell you.” However, it wasn’t me.

Maybe he found a side gig or something.”

“Lan, he’s fourteen. That was more than any part-time job would pay.”

Lan assured me, “I’ll ask him.” “We’ll get to the bottom of it.”

Being a mother who micromanages her child’s every decision is something I never wanted to do. But nothing made sense – Alex couldn’t raise the money himself.

That night, after dinner, I heard Alex talking on the phone in a whisper.

As he walked into the kitchen he said, “Mom.”

“I’m going to my friend Jeremy’s house to work on a project together, okay?”

“Do I need to drop you off?” Wiping my hands, I asked.

“No, it’s not too far. I’m going for a walk.”

He left after a short while.

My only chance to find out if Alex was planning anything was now. I tracked him through the glass which gave him an early advantage.

Then I took my cell phone and keys and followed him.

Alex got into an unidentified car with a blonde after crossing two roads. I had to get closer because I could barely make out her features from where I was.

As I approached the car and finally saw her face, the realization hit me like a ton of bricks. As I stood there, I watched Liu hold Alex and turn around in the car.

Blonde strands of hair, framed by the street lights, framed a face I had known throughout my childhood, even though I hadn’t seen it in a long time.

I was overcome with emotion when I realized that Lia, my sister who had long since disappeared from our lives, had returned and was now deeply involved in my son’s world.

Background: Before we were teenagers, Lia and I were close. I became a miniature version of my mother, always ready to take care of the household and take care of my father.

But Lia became a wild teenager who didn’t care about safety or the law.

She and her boyfriend disappeared right after high school. My parents and I searched for Liu for years without success. We were advised by the police that we could either search more or move on.

My mother mourned Lia and felt as if she had lost her child. Conversely, my father felt betrayed by Lia and gave vent to his anger.

I didn’t stop looking for her. I made friends with the people at the local police station and kept checking for leads, but stopped looking once Alex was born.

I had to admit that Lia had no interest in being found.

But now she was sitting next to my son in her car.

I walked over, unlocked the back door, and climbed inside the vehicle.

“Mom!” Alex shouted. “What are you doing here?”

he shouted, “Lia, why are you here with my son?”

Lii’s wide eyes were fixed on me.

“You disappeared without a trace and now you’re back meddling in our lives through my son?”

My long-lost sister’s eyes softened and showed a complexity reflecting our complicated past.

“No, Cath,” she replied. “Please don’t get confused. I contacted Alex after I found him on Facebook. I believed he could help us mend our relationship.”

Her notes were heavy, full of unspoken hurt and unfinished business from their shared past.

Naturally, the floodgates opened at that moment. I lay down and sobbed.

“You can’t just come back into our lives after all these years,” | he said. “And Alex is not a pawn to help you fix what you left behind.

Lias lowered her eyes and for a brief moment, she felt as if the weight of the past had fallen on her.

“Cathy, I admit my mistake. I’ve gotten better, but I’m still sorry for how I hurt you and the family. And I’d like the chance to make amends.”

I remained silent. Alex turned from the front seat and stared at me so I just sat there and watched.

“Alex, let’s go.

We returned home quietly.

He finished brushing his teeth and commented, “Mom.” “Aunt Lia is nice. She did me a favor. Not bad, but she bought me the new things.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked.

“Because you were upset about the divorce and I didn’t want to add to that.

“Oh my dear,” I said. “It’s not up to you.

“Aunt Lia was also here and she talked to me about everything. Aunt Lia gave me an insight into how I felt during your and Dad’s divorce because I wasn’t aware of it at the time. I can see why you’re mad at her. However, she helped me a lot.”

I kept Alex’s notes in mind as I went to sleep.

He spoke of the Lia I knew and loved as a younger girl, the one who would do anything to help someone, even if it was just to listen.

Additionally, I was unaware of Alex’s difficult divorce struggles. It was only half a year ago. Even though I was mad at Lia for getting Alex involved before reaching out to me, I appreciated her help in adjusting my son to life after the divorce.

And I was familiar with my son. His eyes betrayed love and tenderness when he spoke of Lia.

He was in love with her. Not only did she buy him new clothes, but she also helped him when he was unable to understand the changes in his environment by listening to him.

I asked Alex to call Lia the next day and send the invitation. When we were little I used to make her favorite cheesecake. And she told me about her life up until this moment as we sat and talked for hours.

Although she wanted to meet our parents once more, she was also ready to talk about everything and apologize.

She still has my wrath for what she did. However, I do appreciate Lia’s support in helping Alex; even though they had only recently met, he confided in her enough to open up to her.

A few months later, my parents and I had two family brunches and they immediately forgave Lie. It seems we are well on our way to mending our family bonds.
