Why Ellen DeGeneres Says Trump Prompted Her Permanent Move Abroad

Behind Ellen DeGeneres’ seemingly serene life in the English countryside lies a story few expected—one deeply entwined with the turbulent politics of America’s recent years.

Was her relocation simply about seeking beauty and tranquility, or was it a calculated escape from a darker, more unsettling reality shaped by Donald Trump’s presidency? The truth may reveal unexpected motivations and hidden tensions beneath the surface of this high-profile move.

Ellen DeGeneres has openly confirmed that Donald Trump was the main reason she decided to leave the United States and relocate to the United Kingdom.

During her first public appearance since moving abroad, the 67-year-old was asked if Trump’s presidency influenced her major life decision. She replied simply, “Yes.”

“We arrived the day before the election and woke up to countless texts from friends filled with crying emojis. That’s when I realized, ‘He won,’” the former talk show host shared with broadcaster Richard Bacon on Sunday. “And we thought, ‘We’re going to stay here.’”

Ellen went on to describe life in the UK as “just better.” She praised the country’s beauty: “It’s absolutely stunning. The villages, the towns, the architecture—everything is charming, and life feels simpler.”

She continued, “It’s clean. The way animals are treated here, the politeness of people—I just love it.”

“We adore it here. Portia flew her horses over, and I have chickens. We even had sheep for a couple of weeks,” she added.

Addressing past claims of a toxic work environment on her talk show, Ellen stated, “I’m a straightforward person, very blunt. Sometimes that’s interpreted as being mean. I don’t think there’s anything I can say to erase that reputation, which hurts me deeply. I hate that people think that of me because I know I’m empathetic and compassionate.”

Regarding her future, she admitted that she doubts a show like hers would succeed today. “I wish it would because I’d love to do it again here. But people watch on their phones now, and televisions don’t get the same attention. We’re overwhelmed with entertainment and information.”

When asked about what’s next, Ellen said she’ll “choose her next project very carefully” and confessed, “I want to have fun. I like my chickens, but I’m a little bored.”

Meanwhile, over the weekend, Trump took to Truth Social to threaten Rosie O’Donnell, writing, “Because Rosie O’Donnell is not in the best interests of our Great Country, I am seriously considering revoking her citizenship. She is a threat to humanity and should stay in Ireland, if they want her. GOD BLESS AMERICA!”

O’Donnell, who moved to Ireland with her son after Trump’s second term began, has been an outspoken critic of the former president.

However, legal experts maintain Trump lacks the authority to strip citizenship. Amanda Frost, a law professor at the University of Virginia, explained, “The president cannot revoke the citizenship of a native-born American. Our nation is founded on the principle that the people choose their government, not the other way around.”

In response, O’Donnell posted a photo of Trump alongside Jeffrey Epstein, captioned: “You embody everything wrong with America, and I represent everything you despise about what’s still right. I’m not yours to silence. Never was.”

The White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson dismissed O’Donnell’s remarks as “unhinged rants” symptomatic of “late-stage Trump Derangement Syndrome” and expressed relief she no longer resides in the U.S.

DeGeneres also showed support for O’Donnell, sharing a screenshot of the exchange on Instagram with the caption, “Good for you @rosie.”

Conclusion:

Ellen DeGeneres’ candid revelation about her move underscores the profound impact political climates can have on personal decisions, especially for public figures.

Amid ongoing tensions and heated exchanges involving Trump and his critics, many celebrities continue to voice their discontent. As DeGeneres embraces a new chapter abroad, the divide within the U.S. political and cultural landscape remains sharper than ever.
