With deep sorrow, we share the news of her passing—her identity will leave you in tears.

A tragic oversight or something more?

Questions are being raised as to whether carelessness, a lack of urgency or a complete miscommunication led to the heartbreaking death of three-year-old Ryleigh Hillcoat-Bee. The circumstances surrounding her case have left a cloud of suspicion, with some questioning whether more could have been done to save her life.

From unexplained symptoms to missed medical advice, the sequence of events paints a disturbing picture of systemic failure. What really happened during those critical months leading up to this devastating outcome?

A three-year-old girl has tragically died three months after being discharged from the emergency room, where doctors missed crucial opportunities to diagnose a rare disease.

Ryleigh Hillcoat-Bee fell ill while on holiday with her family in North Wales and was taken to hospital. Tests revealed that her blood contained “extraordinarily high” levels of creatine kinase and potassium – clear indicators of severe muscle damage and rhabdomyolysis. Despite these findings, Ryleigh was sent home.

Three months later, her parents, Caroline and Andrew, rushed her back to the emergency room when she started having trouble breathing. Ryleigh sadly suffered a cardiac arrest and died on 8 November 2021 at Blackpool Victoria Hospital.

During the inquest, Alan Wilson, coroner for Blackpool, highlighted several “missed opportunities” to investigate Ryleigh’s symptoms more closely during her visit to hospital in August 2021.

Diane Rostron, a medical negligence lawyer representing Ryleigh’s parents, said: “Doctors at the hospital were given clear instructions by colleagues in Leeds to consult with a neuromuscular specialist during her admission. This advice was not followed and as a result rhabdomyolysis remained undiagnosed. Had they acted on this advice, Ryleigh’s condition could have been identified and managed, giving her a chance of survival.”

She continued: “Ryleigh’s parents were instead assured that her condition would improve just as quickly as it seemed. We believe her death was preventable and have been instructed to sue for medical negligence.”

Ryleigh’s devastated parents shared their grief: “We are deeply saddened by the loss of our daughter and have fought tirelessly for a full investigation into her death. The coroner’s findings only strengthen our belief that Ryleigh’s condition could have been managed and her death could have been prevented. It breaks our hearts that she didn’t get a chance to survive.”

Chris Barben, president of Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, offered his condolences to the family, saying: “On behalf of the Trust, I want to express my deepest sympathies to Ryleigh’s family and all who loved her. While nothing can bring her back, we will carefully review the coroner’s findings to ensure we learn from this tragedy and work to prevent similar incidents in the future.”

In 2022, Caroline’s sister-in-law Katie Hobbs honored Ryleigh’s memory by running the Royal Parks Half Marathon and organized a charity event that raised over ÂŁ3,000 for The Compassionate Friends.

On the GoFundMe page, Katie wrote: “Caroline and Andrew’s daughter Ryleigh passed away suddenly and unexpectedly last November. Her loss was devastating to her parents and all who knew her. Ryleigh was a joyful little girl with a bright smile who brought magic and happiness to everyone she met. I support The Compassionate Friends because they have provided tremendous support to Caroline and Andrew at this unimaginably difficult time, connecting them with other grieving parents and offering opportunities for healing.”

Ryleigh’s story is a poignant reminder of the importance of vigilance in medical care and the devastating consequences of missing critical opportunities. Her memory lives on through the love of her family and the many lives she touched during her short time on earth.

Ryleigh’s story is a heartbreaking reminder of the devastating consequences that can result from missed medical opportunities. Her untimely death has left an indelible void in the lives of her family, who continue to mourn the loss of their bright, joyful little girl. Despite unimaginable pain, her parents, Caroline and Andrew, have shown immense strength by championing justice and raising awareness of the critical need for thorough medical care.

Their commitment to finding answers and accountability underscores the importance of addressing potential failures in health care systems to ensure that such tragedies are avoided in the future. The support they received, including fundraising efforts from Caroline’s sister-in-law and help from organizations like The Compassionate Friends, was a testament to the compassion and solidarity of those touched by Ryleigh’s story.
