Cherelle, the wife of WNBA star Brittney Griner, recently provided a concerning update on her wife’s well-being while serving time in a Russian prison. In an interview with CNN’s Abby Phillips, Cherelle stated that Brittney is “not well” and “losing it.” Despite these distressing circumstances, Cherelle recently had a productive meeting with President Biden, which provided her with a renewed sense of hope.
According to Phillips, Cherelle reported that President Biden was confident in his administration’s efforts to secure Brittney’s release and return home. While Biden alluded to media reports indicating that the administration may be prepared to exchange Russian prisoners for Griner and another detained American, he did not provide any specific details regarding the swap.
Cherelle Griner told me she had a good meeting with Biden. He gave her more confidence in the admin’s efforts to bring Brittney Griner home. “It allowed me to have confidence in what he’s doing right now.”

Despite the complexity of negotiations with Russia, Cherelle expressed her belief that Biden is determined to get a deal done. Cherelle has also been exchanging letters with Brittney during her imprisonment, which has likely provided some comfort during this challenging time. While the situation remains uncertain, Cherelle’s meeting with Biden offers a glimmer of hope for Brittney’s safe return home.
When a star choses to break the law there are consequences and they shouldn’t use their country of origin to receive special treatment. Already things have been done to ease the burden of being arrested in a foreign country but time in a prison needs to be completed without further consideration of being released early because of their ” importance in the sports world”.
