The incident involved a woman who lost her life in a head-on collision on a US highway just moments after she posted a selfie and updated her Facebook status while driving.
According to The Independent, Courtney Sanford, 32, posted the status on Facebook on Thursday, April 24, 2014, at 8:33 am: “That happy song makes me so HAPPY.”
Just one minute later, at 8:34 a.m., police received a report of a fatal collision.
Authorities explained that Courtney was driving alone when her car crossed the central reservation and collided head-on with a recycling truck before bursting into flames.
Police found no evidence that alcohol, drug,s or excessive speed played a role in the crash. But Lt. Chris Weisner of the High Point Police Department described the tragedy as a stark warning about the dangers of texting and driving.
“A life was lost in a matter of seconds just to let her friends know she was happy. It’s just not worth it,” Weisner said. “As heartbreaking as this is, it’s also a harsh reminder to everyone … you have to stay focused while driving.”
The driver of the recycling truck, 73-year-old John Wallace Thompson, was not injured in the crash.
