The Unlikely Friendship Begins
Kayzen Hunter, a bright-eyed young boy, embarked on a journey to create memories with his family, a journey that would lead him to a remarkable encounter. On a routine basis, the Hunter family frequented the Little Rock Waffle House for their breakfast outings. Little did they know that their lives would be forever enriched by a chance meeting with their waiter, Devonte Gardner.
According to Vittoria Hunter, Kayzen’s mother, her son and Devonte had forged a friendship that spanned over a year. Their bond began when Kayzen accompanied his father on these breakfast outings. Upon returning home, he would excitedly talk about Devonte, sharing how much he admired the friendly waiter. Devonte, at the tender age of 29, had a special knack for connecting with young customers, and he had a memory that could rival a computer’s when it came to remembering their favorite orders. In Kayzen’s case, it was his cherished meal that Devonte had committed to memory.
Because that’s what he anticipates, I always give him a high five when he enters, said Devonte. “He’s a great child. Every time he enters, he makes me things like, “Hey, Devonte, I got a joke for you,” and before we know it, we’re laughing, the waiter says. Kayzen claimed he discovered a few more details about Devonte’s life on a trip to the Waffle House he had with his grandfather John Donofrio a few months back.
“Devonte said he wondered if anyone might know where he could buy a cheap car — he’d been having a hard time saving for one,” added Kayzen. Devonte was living in a hotel room with his wife, and two girls, and walking many miles each day to and from work, he and his grandfather discovered. They had to leave an apartment that was rat-infested and black mold-tainted around eight months previously.
Devonte said, “We relocated into a low-income region because we wanted to find something reasonably priced. “We simply grew weary of insect, rat, and black mold problems. My daughters had been falling ill. Lack of heat and similar issues.
We had to hunker down with four or five blankets when it was freezing outside in order to stay warm.
According to the Seattle Times, Kayzen was furious that Devonte had run into trouble and hurried home to tell his mother about it. He insisted that we launch a GoFundMe campaign to assist Devonte in purchasing a vehicle, Vittoria Hunter recounted. “He persisted in trying. He is a young man with a huge heart.
In order to raise $5,000 for Devonte’s new wheels, Kayzen’s mother stated she decided to assist her son in creating a GoFundMe page. “Devonte is among the happiest and most upbeat people you’ve ever met! He always welcomes us with the biggest smile,” Kayzen said in the description of the ad. “I’m hoping your heart is as big as mine and that you’ll join me in trying to make the world a better place. Any amount is helpful.
When a local television station learned about it, donations poured in, and the fund grew to more than $100,000—enough for a car and to cover Devonte’s family’s rent for the following year, according to her. When Devonte realized what his young customer had done, he claimed he was astounded. He stated, “I started crying — I’d been quietly struggling and didn’t want to ask anybody for anything,” adding that the majority of his tips go toward his family’s $60 daily lodging rent.
Aissa Shorter, Devonte Gardner’s wife, worked opposite shifts at a nearby McDonald’s so they could watch their two young girls, Jade, age 2, and Amoura, age 3, respectively. We had to give up the majority of our possessions due to the mold, but we’re now gradually getting them back, he added.
Devonte continued, “I love working at Waffle House because I get the chance to help people feel wonderful every day. “I adore the visitors, especially Kayzen. It is quite humbling that this tiny boy would act with such generosity.
