Young Girl’s School Tardiness Raises Concerns; Police Step In to Help Her Father

When a father who had recently relocated to Colorado from Oklahoma noticed police officers peering into the windows of his SUV, he could never have anticipated what would transpire next. James Schweikhard had made the move to Colorado with his 10-year-old daughter, seeking a fresh start in life. He shared, “I packed up all our belongings into the truck, and we just drove here. It felt like a risk to stay in Oklahoma.I struggled to secure employment or find a place to call home.”

In Oklahoma, Schweikhard had struggled to secure employment, which ultimately led him and his daughter to live in their Suburban. Unfortunately, after their arrival in Colorado, the vehicle broke down, leaving them with no choice but to sleep inside it while he walked his daughter to school every day. As concerns grew at the girl’s school about their living situation, they decided to contact local law enforcement. Lakewood Police Officer James Butler responded to the call, determined to investigate the situation firsthand.

“I noticed them inspecting my truck, and I asked, ‘Officers, what’s going on?'” recounted Schweikhard to KUSA. “[Officer Butler] said, ‘We’re trying to help you.’ I responded, ‘Okay, I can accept that.’ It’s not something I’m accustomed to – getting help from the police.” However, upon hearing Schweikhard’s story, including his job loss and the non-operational car, Butler felt compelled to extend a helping hand.

Butler commented, “It was the proper course of action. Because at any juncture in our lives, any one of us might find ourselves in a similar circumstance – extending aid to a fellow human being is the moral choice.”With the support of his Lakewood Police colleagues, Butler managed to secure shelter for Schweikhard and his daughter. They also arranged for Ace Towing to transport Schweikhard’s SUV to Sun Valley Automotive for repairs, both companies generously donating their services.

Sun Valley Automotive owner Jere Burton expressed, “It feels truly rewarding to assist someone who is experiencing a difficult time.” In addition to providing immediate relief, the officers are actively working to help Schweikhard and his daughter find stable housing. Schweikhard deeply appreciates the officers’ kindness.

Expressing his appreciation, he shared, “I find it truly amazing and incredibly heartwarming – it was unexpected but profoundly cool.” The touching story sparked a flood of support on Facebook, with one reader observing, “This is yet another instance highlighting the compassion that most police officers possess! He not only changed two lives but also inspired others to lend a helping hand when the officer reached out for assistance. These individuals are the steadfast pillars of our nation, and I take immense pride in them!”

Another user added, “Wow, big thanks to everyone who stepped up to assist this father and daughter. Winter in Colorado can be brutally cold, and I hope he can find a job and establish a stable home for both of them. Stay resilient, maintain your faith, and may the best of luck accompany both of you!”
