Emerson stepped toward his mother.

Without meaning to, Rosalind took half a step back.

He saw it — and that small, involuntary retreat wounded him more than any words could have.

“Mom,” he choked.

She looked at him.

She wanted to hold him the way she had when he was small and skinned his knees.

But he was a grown man who had chosen not to believe her.
