Are You Hungry?

For the first time, the apology sounded real.

“I forgive you,” I said calmly. “But forgiving you doesn’t mean I’m coming back.”

He nodded slowly and stepped aside to let me pass.

The consequences for his business came fast.

The board opened an internal investigation into his land deals; he was required to resign as CEO and sell shares to cover his mounting liabilities.

Our divorce moved forward without a fight, the assets divided fairly. Just before we signed the final papers, he looked up.

“Do you think we could have been happy, if I’d appreciated you sooner?”

“I don’t know,” I said gently.

“And I no longer need to know.”

Chapter 13 — The Circle Begins Again

Over the following months, my life changed completely, without cameras or attention.

The foundation opened more shelters and expanded its youth scholarships.

The new community center opened that autumn, with a simple plaque by the entrance:

Nathaniel and I kept working closely together, often lingering over quiet dinners after long board meetings, and a deep affection grew between us — though neither of us felt any need to name it yet.
