Archaeologists Baffled By A 2,000-Year-Old Skeleton Found In Scotland With Its Brain Scooped Out And Its Bones Turned Into Tools
In the far north of Scotland, close to where the mainland runs out and gives way to the Atlantic, there is a lake called Loch Borralie.
It sits in Sutherland, one of the most remote counties in Britain, in a landscape of exposed heath and grey rock that has changed little in outline since the last Ice Age retreated and left the land exposed.
The wind comes off the ocean here without much to slow it down.
The light is extraordinary — long and slanting in summer, brief and hard in winter.
People have lived in this landscape for thousands of years, leaving cairns and stone structures across the hills as the only persistent evidence that they were ever here at all.
In the year 2000, local people near Loch Borralie noticed something unusual.
Rabbits, burrowing through the earth near a low pile of stones, had disturbed something buried beneath.
When archaeologists arrived and excavated the site, they found a rectangular cairn — a structure of stacked and arranged stones that had clearly been built with intention — and inside it, the partial skeletal remains of two people who had been buried there roughly two thousand years ago.
The discovery sat in the archaeological record for years.
An initial examination produced a report, and the bones went into storage.
The original analysis suggested the marks on the bones had been made by animals — rats or dogs gnawing on the remains after burial.
It was a reasonable interpretation given what was visible, and it placed the burial within the range of known Iron Age funerary evidence from northern Britain.
Then a new team looked more carefully.
The results of that re-examination were published in June 2026 in the journal Antiquity, in a paper by Dr.
Laura Castells Navarro of the University of York and her colleagues, produced as part of a large research project called COMMIOS — a European Research Council-funded investigation led by Professor Ian Armit that brings together ancient DNA analysis, isotope chemistry, osteoarchaeology, and funerary archaeology to examine Iron Age communities in Britain.
The team had access to tools that the original investigators did not, and they used those tools on the Loch Borralie remains with results that transformed the interpretation of the burial entirely.
The marks on the bones were not made by animals.
They were made by people.
