I Spent Nearly Two Weeks Recovering From Surgery and My Husband Never Visited Once—Then I Came Home and Froze at the Front Door
PART 1 — THE PROMISE
I spent nearly two weeks in the hospital after emergency abdominal surgery.
My husband never came to see me once.
Not once.
That sentence made no sense to anyone who knew Gavin and me.
We had been married for twenty years.
Twenty years of finishing each other’s sentences.
Twenty years of bad Christmas gifts, mortgage payments, job changes, family funerals, cheap vacations, Sunday coffee, and arguments that usually ended with one of us asking whether the other wanted takeout.
Gavin was not a perfect husband.
Neither was I a perfect wife.
But until that hospital stay, if someone had asked me one thing I knew with complete certainty, I would have said:
Gavin shows up.
That was why his absence terrified me.
A few weeks earlier, severe abdominal pain had dropped me to the living-room floor.
By that evening I was at St.
Elizabeth Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio.
Tests showed a serious abdominal problem requiring urgent surgery.
I remember very little from the first hours except Gavin.
His hand around mine.
